there were some Toyota's brought in 57, and even a few before(for testing by the US military)

nice to see those #'s posted

I wish Toyota USA had an interest in this stuff.

Someday when I get bored and have nothing to do, I'll try to track down the Aberdeen test. If they had the 25 there for trials, there's a record of it.

the Toyota 6x6 was also tested in the early 60's I think. I forget where I found this info, but its some lit I have someplace

I betcha the dealerships would give their left arm to have access to some 25s to display on their lots when they unveil the FJ-Cruiser later this year. (The Ford dealerships did that recently with vintage Mustangs and T-Birds.) That would generate some interest from Toyota USA.

I've actually thought of leasing mine to a dealership.... bet they'd pay well for one. Although they'd probably want to put a bezel on it to match the FJ Cruiser

So how many are still around or at least accounted for? I can see 7 of em from here...

I never wrote down an actual number, but in the last few years I count around fifty. Of course it seems like a few of us have most of them. ;)

Well guys, it's been a couple of years, and I was wondering if anyone managed to figure out how many are left...more or less.

So is that one in '58 the 'oldest' cruiser we keep seeing?

What about 61 1959's...is that right? How many here have a 1959...and would that be frame number, or titled number?

Would a '59 titled as a 1961 be one of these 61 1959 FJ25s?

if my frame # says it is a 1958 does that mean i have the #1 ???

just wondering, if anyone had a breakdown of models per year?

1965 has 2595 imported, but how many 40's, 45lpb's, 45lv's?

:eek::eek::eek:

Very interesting...wasn't the first Land Cruiser sold in the states sold to Frank Conn? And, doesn't TLC claim that their '58 is THE first Land Cruiser in the states? Then where would strever's '58 come into play...and are we dateing by stamp date, or sale date as far as those models sold in the states?

Strever...any more pictures of your 25?

According to Jim's very first post in this thread, these numbers are Toyota 'SALES' in the mainland U.S. despite the title of the thread which refers to the number imported. These are two distinct and separate numbers.

The sales figures are only indirectly related to the number imported in that to sell a Japanese vehicle, it had to first be imported. It may have been sold in the same year it was imported, but not necessarily.

So, when a 1959 like mine is titled as a 1961, it showed up in the Land Cruiser SALES total for the mainland U.S. in 1961, it didn't show up anywhere in 1959. My 1960 FJ25 is also a 1961 SALE since it was titled as a 1961.

No one worried too much about the number of vehicles imported in any specific calendar year until import quotas were imposed on the Japanese in the early eighties. After that all Japanese manufactures kept very detailed records about the number of each model imported.

So, its important for us to keep in mind as we discuss SALES and IMPORTS in any specific year, they are not the same number.

Thanks Rick...I remembered you explaining it in another post, but I wasn't sure if it also pertained to this list.

What about the ’58 listed above? Strever, what does the title say?

if my frame # says it is a 1958 does that mean i have the #1 ???

Well, it's fifteen units older than the one I sold.............. :)

Unless you've got some history for the truck who knows. And with all the South American imports clouding the issue................ :D

Interesting that frame is primered red. Do you think that's the original paint on the frame? My later ones were yellow zinc primer.

it is titled as a 59

and how early do you think the one you sold is ?

so what are the vin# of these 2 ?

attached is an image of the front of the truck showing all of the different layers of paint ?

The frames could have been made in 58 then used on later rigs correct?

I don't think the frame was stamped until the vehicle was produced. But with slow sales at the start doesn't mean that FJ25 produced in 1958 didn't hit our shores until 1959. Or vehicles made at the end of the year didn't get imported until the start of the next year. There is a real good chance that anything imported in January would have produced in November or December. Production date and model year are two different things. My 1963 model FJ40 has a vin the starts with 2. From that information I can't tell you what year it was imported

John

John is right, the VIN only tells us when the vehicle was made. While chances are that the vehicles did make it to one of the TMS ports in the U.S. the same year in which they were produced, it was not necessarily so. After arriving in the U.S., however, we know nothing about the vehicle until it was titled.

So, the first FJ25 sold in the U.S. market was very likely not the first FJ25 built for and shipped to America. If 100 FJ25's were built with consecutive serial numbers in the Toyota plant, they could have then been shipped off to various U.S. ports like Portland, SF, LA, Houston, Jacksonville, Baltimore, Newark or Boston. From there they were sold to Toyota Dealers and later they were imported by TMS and sold to Distributors and then they were sold to Toyota Dealers. So, the VIN tells us nothing about when the vehicle was sold.

If an FJ25 built in 1959 with a serial that began with a 9 was not wholesaled to a dealer until 1961, the VIN plate would reflect 1961 and the vehicle would have been titled as a 1961 because a dealer would not have purchased a two year old vehicle and a customer would not have wanted it without a very big discount. In this way a 1959 was still new in 1961. This custom was also followed by U.S. manufacturers with trucks, truck cab and chassis and with school bus chassis, but, as far as I know, serial numbers of cars were never 'updated', I think this only occurred with trucks. Maybe the laws were different for car registrations vs truck registrations.

So, it is very likely that most of the 61 FJ25's sold in 1959 were actually 1958 models. It is also likely that not very many FJ40's were actually registered in the U.S. in the 1961 CY; most of those registrations were probably FJ25's with 1958, 1959 or 1960 VIN numbers.

Has anyone seen an FJ25 titled as a 1962? If not, I suppose we could assume that the dealers sold thru the FJ25's by the end of 1961 I.
