I'm pulling a 3B with H55F out of an 1988 BJ70 and am hoping to one day install it into my 1984 FJ40 (2F with H55F).

I see in toyodiy.com that the drive shafts are different part numbers, but wonder if there is any real world experience with the interchangeability - or concrete, can I use the FJ40 drive shafts with the 3B setup?

the wheelbase diferences between 40 series and 70 series come to my mind ..

My question was - can I use the drive shafts from the 40 2F/H55F on the 70 3B/h55F setup?

The 70 wheel base is 2.31 meters and the 40's is 2.285 so there's a 1.6 cm difference in length.

I guess looking at the yokes they appear to be the same part number but the shafts are different (length) and as long as I put the tranny in the same place it should work out OK.

Of course I'll search the threads for the 3B into 40 setup to see what was done as well - help yourself, please :o

When I put the H55 in my 40, I tried to use the cardon joint 60 shaft in the front but the joint was FUBAR, I ended up shortening the front 40 shaft, and putting it on the rear, then used the front 60 shaft also shortened, on the front. It is easy to have a shop shorten the shafts, and with the slip joints you don't have to be exact, I got mine both done for $35, and he threw in a dozen fresh eggs. Mine came from an '84 60, and went onto an '80 40, and used the '80 40 u joints...

if you need longer drive shafts and you have 4.10 coarse spline, which i do. you can use the 84-85 toyota mini truck short end of the drive shaft. it has about another 1" or 2 of spline travel. might have to drill out the holes to make it work.

drive shafts

this is a comparison of the two. this longer one is from a newer ifs 4runner which might bolt to the fine spline but ? i know the 84-85 trucks bolt to the coarse spline, they are the same length.

plus the older style u joints go at a steeper angle.

if your installing a h55f in a 40 you have to consider the lift of your rig. Did you install a lift kit or a SOA on it? Because the shorter driving shaft will not be able to carry the angle. You will need a double cv type driving shaft found in early 1985 toy pickup.I can show you picture of my setup if you want.

My Deal Is...

if your installing a h55f in a 40...

I've got the 2F with H55F. I'm pulling the 3B with H55F.

I'll keep the 40 drive shafts and position the tranny in the same place and I'm golden. toyodiy.com shows the same shaft for the BJ42 and FJ40 for those years so it should be no problem.

I needed the advice because I wanted to know if I needed to keep the 70 drive shafts as spares. They are not the same and wouldn't fit and they've been sold with the rest of the BJ70.

Thanks for all the advice and comments.

I saw this on Pirate, not sure if ti will be applicable to your swap

If you are able to, grab the entire driveline from the engine aft to the tansfer case, if the tranny is a 5 speed. Having the OD gear is well worth the additional hassles, IMVHO. In order to make this work in the FJ40 you'll need to shorten your rear DS 3.5" and lengthen the front DS the same amount, that being 3.5" also.
