I was looking through the H series FSM recently and noticed that the "HU" version of the engine that was used in Dynas came with a oil cooler from the factory. Anyone have one of these or photos of one? The FSM is kinda vague in this area.

I'd like to hook up an oil cooler when I turbo the engine next month. I can figure out the path the oil takes but can't tell if the oil cooler is external/internal to the engine and where it hooks up to the plumbing.

Here's a snapshot of the diagram from the FSM:

Looks a lot like the older B engine's oil coolers, and yes, they were external.

Some pics...

nice .. and questions.

Where do you get the oil filter sandwich .. ? or which it's the proper size and thread .. ?

thanks !

It was on the car when I bought it-I don't know who installed it . My 60 was UN vehicle before so maybe it was standard on military vehicles???

you guys have me curious. I'm now going to have to check my new 1 HZ once I get it into the shop and out of the crate.

Well, I think the oil cooler on my H-engine is leaking. It looks exactly like the one in the drawing for post 1. I have oil contamination in the cooling system. Chemical analysis of coolant for exhaust gases is negative and engine oil is clean....so no head gasket issues. Only thing left is this cooler.

Rufus, do you still need a photo?

Nope. No photo necessary. I'll eventually get around to doing a sandwich type when I convert from the canister to cartridge type oil filter.

what about 12ht oil cooler?

how does this connect, i assume i can do this on a 12 ht. i have been thinking of putting an oil cooler but could not figure out where to connect it.

I have an oil cooler on my 2H. I'll take some pics and post them:cheers:

This is what I've decided to do for an oil cooler on my H series turbo project.

I bought a stock H series diesel oil filter mount from SOR. I'm going to modify it. I'll drill and tap the canister threads to 3/4" 16 tpi. Then I'll be able to use a regular thermostatic sandwich adapter. I'll drill a bunch of return holes and TIG the aluminum plate in place and never have to deal with those cumbersome canister filters again.

I like that I'll be able to run the same type of oil filters I run on the 3B (and my plow truck and 67 Mustang.)

I'm just waiting on the drill bit and tap to arrive before I start the welding.

I know there's a simple spin-on adapter solution available from QLD Cruisers. I opted not to go that route because it wouldn't solve the oil cooler issue and I'd end up using a different filter too.

Installing later today

The tap finally arrived today in the mail. Sometimes stuff from Ebay takes forever.

Here's a few photos of my progress.

This is what it looks like after welding and drilling the return holes.

Here's the assembled sandwich adapter.

Here's a view of the complete assembly prior to welding. The PH8A and the sandwich adapter ends up being about the same length as the stock canister.

I'm going to install it later tonight. I'll snap a couple photos when it's done.

Forgot photos

I forgot to include photos of the oil cooler and filter adapter installed on the engine. I also forgot to snap them before installing my intercooler plumbing. So these aren't the best shots.

The black goo on the sandwich adapter isn't oil. I made a mess with the fuel/oil compatible thread sealer I used on the fittings for the hoses going to the oil cooler.

I know it's an old thread but I think it would be good to alert about an specific issue on this extra oil radiators installs.

In cold climate situations I was having very low oil pressure, mainly at start-up. The EDIC was shutting down my engine 4 to 5 times when temperatures were under -10 Celsius before the oils pressure would reach the minimum necessary.

You can follow my problem on this thread:
