Newbie here, read pages and pages but cant find an answer.
I have a 77 BJ40, Casting on block is "B".
#2 cylinder had zero compression. Pulled the head, which has a "3B" casting.
Would this mean that the head on my engine is a 3B head?
If so , will this head work on a B engine?
This head needs rebuilding, just checking before I spend more money.
Thanks,Mike

Thanks

Thanks. Should I spend the money and completely rebuild this head or not?
The sleeves and pistons are fine.
The 3B head needs a complete valve job. The pre cups are all loose, seeing some cracking in between valves. Are there any exchange heads out there I could buy?

nope, junk that head and get a new one..

the B and 3B might be interchangeable but that is a broad statement since the exhaust and intake manifolds are not the same and the studs are different.
will they bolt on? obviously, but not "interchangeable".

try Dan at 4wheel for a replacement head, Geoff Walsh in Oz... maybe Robbie might even have them in stock.

make sure you get new prechambers as well.

since the final bill will be close to $1500.

humm, it was my understanding that the "B" did not have liners... can anyone confirm for me?

:hhmm:Hmmm.

Wish I could tap into the knowledge that you guys have (Wayne/Rob).

I didn't think the heads were interchangeable but I suspected the manifolds were interchangeable. (Certainly the exhaust one anyway - which is the one that often fails/cracks and needs to be replaced.)

As a means of trying to gain people's input (and to make such information available to others) - I put together this thread about the interchangeabily of engine parts between a B and 3B:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tec...7cc-b-3431cc-3b-parts-interchangeability.html

Care to post your views there about what I've got wrong, what I need to clarify, what information is missing, or whatever? (I'd really appreciate it.)

Since I don't own a 3B - I admit I'm very likely to get things wrong with "interchangeability".

Thanks
Tom

i found out that the "B" is also sleeved...
the exhaust studs are different between the B and 3B
the exhaust manifold for the B is 2 bolt to the pipe and the 3B is 3 bolt to the pipe

Head gasket

Again, what I have is a B block with a 3B head.
Took the head off, needs valves etc. Whomever did this head swap used a 3B head gasket.
Is this okay?
I can get a brand new Toyota 3B head, not sure about the availability of the B head.
I dont want to make a big $ mistake.
Thanks

Thanks Wayne. I think I'll add a link to this thread (some time soon when I get a chance) in my "interchangeability" thread. And I hope to do some research about what you've said here and add a comment about it there. (No time right now.) - Ps....I think my B-engine exhaust manifold does have the same stud size as a 3B!

There are different part numbers for B (11115-56010 subs 11115-56011) and 3B (11115-58010 subs 11115-58011) head gaskets. So they are different.

Anyway B heads are indeed readily available so you don't need to buy a 3B head.
I seem to remember there being 2 different heads for the B engine though. - One designed for the alloy rocker cover and one designed for a pressed-steel rocker cover. (Australian eBay has had them advertised recently for instance)
