HI guys,
I am going to add some quarter panel protection to my rear Kaymar bumper. i am having trouble making a decision on what would look best and be pretty strong.

Here is what I am thinking about doing.

Forgive the rough drawings but you get the idea.

What you guys think?
kaymar rear bumper side with trail ready quarter panel half up.webp
kaymar rear bumper side with trail ready quarter panel three quarters up.webp
rear kaymar with trail ready like quarter panel protection.webp

Thinking about using these from ballistic fab. to make it bolt on and off so i can change out rear tail lamp if needed.
Interlocking I.D. Tube Clamp ballistic fab $30.webp

trying to come up with some mounting ideas since the kaymar bumper is flush with with quarter panel. if it stuck out about 2 inches i would just mount tube to it.

by the way i want to use Hrew 1.5x .120 tube and 2-3 inch wide 1/4 inch plate for mount in front of tail lamp.

Thinking about mounting tube like in the part in pic circled to the upper corner of kaymar bumper by mud flap. thats where i would but the part from clamp from ballictic fab.

that balistic clamp would likely work but if you ever hit the hoop hard enough while wheeling to bend it even a little--then the clamps will likely never line up again

also when you "disconnected " the hoop the remaining bumper piece would look like Sheet. especially if you scabb the bumper with the extra sheet you speak of.

just come up with a good design and weld it up for good. just a small hoop is all you need. my little hoops have saved me multiple times. just copy what slee does (everyone else does)

the wildwest parts are butt ugly. you could fab thet yourself in an hour

Not a big fan of Wild West hoop. just don't like the way it looks.

Dusty you think your hoop saved your quarter panels because you were high up on 42s? i am sitting a little lower so i am curious. i don't want to protect my panel after it is damaged! done that before and kicked myself for not protecting it sooner!

going for a look like the Trail Ready bumpers. just not as bulky. Its looks like the pic below. sorry for the heep pic

the height of my 80 isn't the issue. the issue is having such a huge steel ass of 80ness hanging off your truck that catches on everything when comin off rocks. you hit the 80 rear quarters when you back into stuff and when you drive off of stuff. a little hoop is all ya need most of the time. put a big tall hoop out there and all you have is a damage multiplier unless you make it out of massive steel. besides that, the kaymar is already pretty well protective of the quarters as it sticks out to the side so much.

and the hoops are only as tough as the bumper they are welded to. And that kaymar is not the toughest as it is

But its your bumper and the TR protectors do look a little cool. ill bet the hoops on the TR are not that tough with the vertical rear piece of plate being the weak point-ill bet they bend if you lay sideways onto a rock. the slee design would be tougher

best thing you could do to that kaymar is chop that reciever hitch from it

So maybe you missed my question.. is that a modified swingout on the kaymar? Thats not the standard mounting position for the latch. Looks like there was a latch on the right at one point in the correct position?

the tire carrier is a modified kaymar swing out that originally was made to attached to frame with a stock bumper. I would have had to modify the kaymar swing out carrier to carry a 36 inch spare. At $550 that is too expensive to buy then have to modify it. So i got the tire carrier that attaches to frame and is meant to be used with the stock bumper. the spindles and bearings are the same size and at $250 was a much better price for something i had to cut on. handles the 36 well. next i am going to add a plated so my hi lift jack will fit on it as well.

It is a dual pivot bumper (spindles on both ends) and the holes are for the swing outs that are made for it.

i am probably going to take dusty's advice and make a smaller hoop. the higher the hoop goes the more leverage on that bumper side. the main part of bumper is 1/4 inch thick the outside is 1/8. i wish the outers were 1/4.

I have a Kaymar on my '94 and after looking at that link for the Wild West hoops
(socalfj provided) and Dave's install of them on his and his plans for using them on a Rubicon run, I have one burning question - how did they perform??? You get to the end of the thread and he never reported back!

My advice would be to call him or pm him and find out. If you notice the dates, -it was 2 years ago - more than enough time. Personally, I think it's a waist of time - the Kaymar is definitely not up to supporting those hoops, for that purpose, without some serious modification. The bumper is great for supporting the swingouts and receiver hitch, but not for serious technical wheeling. It's a expedition kind of bumper - it actually reduces the departure angle - great for carrying things and towing, but terrible for tough spots (dropping off ledges and when clearance is needed). It's definitely better than stock protection - but is sadly lacking in rock bangs and the like. You can't just weld or bolt some hoops in that area and expect good protection. Like you, yourself, said - the metal is 1/8" in this area. Even if it was 1/4", like the main part, it still needs a tie in to the vehicle frame at or near that section to do the job correctly. My .02 - good luck- keep us informed with what you do and how it performs, I'm sure interested and so will other Kaymar owners, I'll bet.

Really? Someone should tell my rear Kaymar that. I've leaned it into rocks, dropped it off countless ledges, backed it into things, etc. If it were one of my kids I treated that way, I'd be in jail.;) OBTW, aside from scratched up powder coating, I've yet to bend anything on it aside from the hooks on the underside.

I would have had to modify the kaymar swing out carrier to carry a 36 inch spare.

:confused:my 37" spare fits just fine w/o any mods.

Good to know

do you have any problems getting to latch to swing it out? since the latch would essentiall be behind a 37 inch tire, right? pics?
