In the middle of my recent Elk hunt, my master window switch stopped operating my pass front window. I could continue to operate the window from the pass door switch and noticed an occasional connection from the drivers switch. When I returned home (after 10 bucks at the do-it-yourself car wash spraying off the stickiest mud Ive ever encountered) I disassembled the master door switch assy and carefully took it apart. Inside I found a remarkable amount of black crust on the connection points where the pivoting cradles for each switch touch the contact points. Some Alcohol and Qtips quickly cleaned them up and got them operating perfectly again. NOTE - if you find a very small spring left over, it goes inside the window "child lock" switch for the indent. Little spring + big fingers = patience .
By the condition of the rest of the contact points I was soon to loose connection on several other windows. Thought Id pass it along.

Bumping an old thread because it helped me out. This was exactly the problem I had with my windows. Thanks OP.

Attached is a pic of the inside of my driver's side switch after the first hit of contact cleaner. It was much worse before that.

That little spring is terrible. If you pull this thing apart try really hard not to bump the lock button and you might get lucky and not have to mess with that spring. It's a 2 minute job with a phillips head to R&R this thing, not counting that spring.

Nice! I'll do this tomorrow. You mention 'contact cleaner'. Where did you pick this up?

Cool - glad it helped somebody.

Damn that little spring! :)

Damn that little spring on the Window Lock button for sure!

This actually doubled my cleaning time.

I got frustrated and decided to put a dab of super glue on the plastic post that the spring sits on. This held the spring in place so that I could get everything put back together. No effect on the function of the window lock. Maybe this will help someone save some time.

I did this last night. Mine was black all over when I got it apart. Cleaned it up good and put it back in but did not seem to cure my problem. For what it is worth that little PITA spring for the child safety lock is not worth fighting with unless you need to be able to use it. I did not even bother trying to put it back in. The only thing it does is hold the switch down so the door switches wont work. If you do not need to lock the other windows then throw it in the trash and put everything else back together.

I need to do this to the '97 soon. Did you get an elk?:D I might have to ask my father-in-law if he has anymore elk steak in his freezer. That sounds really good for dinner.:hillbilly::D

window lock out spring

window lock out spring...where does that little sucker go? I had my master switch apart and was putting it back together and accidentialy touched that window lock out button and of course it came apart. I just cant figure out how it goes.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Disregard, I figured it out. My windows seem to go up faster and more consistently after cleaning.

Took my master switch apart to clean contacts and inspect. The rear lockout button flew apart. Gave up on the spring too after working with it for 45 min.

I too had a problem with my DS window. Took the switch apart, cleaned all the contacts and it worked great...for a few weeks. I still have intermittent problems. Never sure when it will get stuck in the down position.

I've taken apart and cleaned my switches many times, always to have a window not work a few weeks later. I finally fixed it all...
What happens is over time the copper contacts bend, making you hit the button harder.. and bend yet even further away. So being careful I re-bent all the rocker contacts so they are really close to begin with. Since doing that I haven't had a problem for several months. Hope this helps others with continous issues.

I'll try it and see what happens. It's only the drivers window all others are great. Even the drivers window works good when it does operate.

Thanks for the picture of the darn spring as well @rolliges - On another note, an issue I am having is that the auto up/down seems to jam up...it's hard to tell exactly, but it feels like it will have a little less play. I have to wiggle it a few times and it will eventually start working. I bought a master switch from a used LC and it did the same thing after a week or two.

gents
does the “plunger” with the cap on it go over the spring and into the “sled” with the contacts on it AFTER the whole assembly is together?
i see a little slot at the bottom of the plunger and i can see how it seems like it should get slotted into the sled somehow but right now my top will sproing off since nothing is holding it down.
the plunger can only go on in one direction so it seems like this should be easy.
