I don't have a whole lot to report on this 80, so I'll delve into how I got it, then go over the mods.

After a brief stint away from the 80's that involved a selling my old 80 ROTW Old 93 I've come full circle again. ;p

I sold my old 80 to a member, on the eve of one of the nastiest winters colorado had seen in MANY years. Of course...I was wearing my bad idea jeans. I purchased a 1974 HJ45 with intent to fix it up and drive it. Well, being 6'4"+ and a family of 4, this proved to be a not so smart idea. While the HJ45 was undoubtably one of the coolest cruisers around, I just couldn't spend the money to fix it up like it needed. I sold that to a mud member and who completely restored it from the ground up. Here's a completed pic, the link to all pictures/work is here:

I ended up then getting my friends 67 FJ40 and started building it up. Again...with family involved I just wasn't going to be able to use it like I wanted. No A/C, no room and a family of 4 with a popup camper....wasn't gonna happen. I wish I could have kept that AND got another rig...but sometimes just doesn't work out that way.

I was perusing the classifieds as I like to from time to time and found someone looking to trade/sell an 80. It was nicely built up and he was looking for a built 40. After some talks and negotiations/work we traded straight across. We made the trade and met in Salina Kansas. I live in Greeley, he lives in Arkansas. Driving a 40 on 37's 500 miles in January was fun :D

Everything checked out, we made the trade and started the fun drive home. It honestly felt like i was in a cadillac. My friend is a Jeep guy was blown away by how nice it drove...of course it felt stellar after sitting in a 40 that long. And we actually had control of the heat  WHOA!

Here's what I got on my end of the deal.

awesome rig!

Great rig!

Pass me a Blue Ribbon real quick!

BTW, can I get more info on the rear view cam monitor?

thanks guys.

parting with the cruisers was tough as I'd like to keep them all...but the 80 by far is the best in terms family wheeler/daily driver/camper towing/:princess: friendly/safe rig as can be. Of course I haven't owned a nice 70 series troopy yet so ;) hard to tell

The backup is pretty simple.

It's the "roadmaster" cheapie one that people were talking about. My dad bought a few for his work to test them but they went a different way so he ended up giving me. Its the wireless unit. You hook into the reverse light lead and ground it. I hard wired the monitor up front to the fuse box. It works actually pretty dang good. I do pickup some surveillance cameras while driving...mostly gas stations  The wired one probably works better, but so far I have no complaints on this one.

Great looking truck.

Looks great! Like the rear camera idea especially for wheeling.

Did you wish you went Slee 4" springs all the way around... or does it ride well with the Slee4"/J spring combo?

Any bumpsteer or wandering on the road with the following setup:
DC driveshaft
Slee Caster plates
Slee bumpstop spacers
Extended stainless steel brake lines from Slee
Slee Adjustable upper rear control arms

Woot! my 500th post :)

Yeah, I actually used it while backing up on the trail. I was thinking I'd like to find another one and put it on the front pointing down. The 80 is big and hard to see around or in front of. Would be cool on the trail turn that on :D

I"m re-thinking about going to SLee 4" springs in the rear now. Only because my build is starting to go a different way. We are doing a lot more camping now and we also are towing a popup. So the load is geting more on the rig. I think the SLee will hold the weight better. I do like the Slee/J combo. I'm slightly taller in the rear which works pretty good for loaded. and rides nice.

I basically have the full 4" setup from Slee without the rear springs. The rig tracks/drives really nice. Doesn't wander, no vibs no bumpsteer. I"m hesistant to mess with the suspension anymore as it drives so nice now :D I think the SLee 4" rears will probably be the same height, just different rate so no issues there.

Killer rig & nice writeup.

Welcome back to 80s, nice rig. Cool to hear the sequence of events that led you back to a wagon. Family of 4 here to so I completely understand. Would be hard to part with the other two though...

Oh, thanks for the rear upper shock mount idea with your previous 93. I made some copies and love them. :hillbilly:

Cool Rig! My 80 looks just like yours minus about $5000 of goodies! Do they salt the roads in Arkansas? Just curious because there seems to be some surface rust on the undercarriage.

TK

I dunno if they do there or not. here in Colorado they sometime use Magnesium Chloride which is worse IMO. The picture makes it look worse than it is. It's basically surface...I'd imagine more to do with the fact that it has 245K miles in a semi-humid state. You can see the frame and upper areas have none, think it's just rock chips and such.

She's in dry colorado now so I'll probably knock off the surface rust and make her look purty

Nice rig!
I have a soft spot for white 80's. Mine is green. There is something about the clean white look. It is clean, utilitarian, and yet beautiful. I had to paint mine and sometimes I wonder and wish........
But green is good! And my green is a little bit famous.

Ben,
Nice rig, and a great story! I have an ARB and am trying to figure out where I can fit a couple gallons of air. I have a Long Ranger aux. tank, so I can't go to the rear, oh well.

here in Colorado they sometime use Magnesium Chloride which is worse IMO.

I know it's YHO, but Mag Chloride is kind IMHO compared to rock salt where I grew up in STL. My minitruck had holes in it that I could fit my fists through...

Anyways, great ROTW!!!

Let me know if your ever up in my neck of the woods!

Nick

Sweet rig!

Now hold on to that one:flipoff2:

Nice write up. I'm glad to see your HJ (Along with the manual) went to a good home. I was surprised when you sold it.

I too like the white 80's. It's my favorite color next to the Dune beige ones popping up.

Nice job.

thanks all...I'll have a bit more to update soon...

Roof rack...(within the week)
custom paint/graphics...
cooler/fridge slide...
winch...
