I replaced my damaged stock muffler so got this one. I asked for quiet muffler- I'm not looking for sound quality. I just want a quiet truck.
I was told the length determines how loud it is. Shape is inconsequential.

so this is a XL R21227 (I couldn't find that part # on the web but it was on my receipt)

Just driving home, it was loud. It sounds good enough but we'll see after I go do some freeway and offroad. hopefully it doesn't drone too bad.
I may add a smaller muffler at the rear if it is.

It does tuck up nicely compared to stock so it should keep out of harm's way a bit better.

James any performance gains noticed? I am sure if there is it is minimal, but nevertheless I wanted to ask....

what, you never saw shiney metal before? :flipoff2:

it's what they had

Oh, he has seen shiny before. Just take a look at his bling wheels! :grinpimp:

By the way....how much did that thing set you back?

it was about $180 including new pipe at the rear, muffler & labor. not bad.

cc93cruiser,
not sure on performance gain. i'll see how it goes and update later

Looks nice! I wish they would have tucked it up more, cause it looks like there's plenty of room above it.

it could go higher if you cut the pipe at the cats and rerouted but I didn't have time for that. It is angled higher at the rear, nice and high but yes, you can tuck it up much further. I'll do that when I re-route the front crossover pipe & cats

update=
I noticed it seems to have a bit more pep and my scangauge does read higher mpg's than before the muffler. Could it really affect it like this?
anyway, the sound is not bad at all. It's got a nice sound but if you stomp on it, it's loud. I still may add a second muffler, we'll see how it feels after a few hrs on the freeway

Any updates on muffler? I'm looking to to get mine done but like you I don't want it to be loud.

Thanks

the one above, although nice, seems a bit large, if you want a good offroad muffler with light low tones only on acceleration, check out flowmaster 50 series mufflers, they are small and square and can be tucked nicely......

Noah

The Magnaflow is long but not too big. If I routed the pipe up a bit, the entire muffler would be above the frame rails.

The flowmaster 50 is way too loud for me.

from my understanding-
longer= quieter

I think there is a good reason OEM mufflers are massive.

X 2 on the Flowmaster 50 being loud. I went back and added a resinator behind mine but now it sounds like a force inducted papershredder. :D a local member got a "turbo" thrush muffler, very similar to stock size w/ just a slightly deeper tone; i wish i would have done the same.

@FirstToy,
I was doing some mud research on a MF exhaust setup and found your old post. If I'm not mistaken, I think the muffler is the Magnaflow 13746 XL Stainless Steel 2.5" Round Muffler. What do you think? This is what i'm going to go with and have the piping rerouted over the frame. It's the largest MF muffler body that I could find... I like to hear the music instead of exhaust drone but I also enjoy the audible throttle response during acceleration. Would you be able to post an audio clip for reference?
-I had a Flowmaster Cat-back System with the 70 Series muffler on a 4.0L V6 T4R and it actually sounded great for a V6 but still a little much at cruising speed. I'm still going back and forth between the two options.

weird, I don't find my 50 series flowmaster loud at all? I guess it all depends on perspective and opinion of what is loud. I don't hear it much on the freeway but it has a good sound under acceleration which I like. Again, perspective, as I am coming from the FJ40 leaf sprung no top crowd so the 80 series is like a barka lounger compared to that, lol, :)

Yep. Perspective. I never thought anything about my FM 40 series muffler on my jeep YJ rolling down the road with M/T tires and topless either. LOL! I must be getting old I guess. I like it quieter these days withy little rumble.

I'm not sure if that's the muffler. I can measure it this weekend and get back to you.
It's pretty good and sounds good, I think better than that video clip.
But there is drone at freeway speed. My wife doesn't seem to notice or be bothered by it.
Not significant but louder than stock.

It could also be because my tailpipe is cut short of the body, so the sound is bouncing under the truck, instead of shooting directly out the side. I plan to extend the tip to clear that up.

A friend put a small second muffler on his 80. It hink he has a Flowmaster 50, then another small muffler near the back.
He seems to be fine with it.

Thanks for the feedback! The measurements would be great. The wife factor is big for me too. I like taking her out in the truck when we out for dates.
I'm planning on dumping a SS tip out the passenger side behind the rear tire. I actually impetuously ordered the muffler today. Going to have it installed next week sometime. Also deleting one cat and routing piping over frame. Going to try and keep the stock resonator in hopes of taking any edge off. Do you have a sound clip of yours?
Thanks!

about 27"x 6" wide
don't have audio but it does sound nice
