So my girlfriend and I of 2.5 years broke up today and I'm moving back in with my parents. Long story short, what is the best way to sell an FZJ without screwing an enthusiast?

My truck has a bunch of issues that I'd rather not plague some nice person from MUD with.

Be open with all of the defficiencies to whomever looks at it- enthusiast or not, Mudder or not. A newbie is a potential enthusiast/Mudder but if he buys a sack of s##t unknowingly he may end up a Ford fan.

Why not put it up for sale here on Mud? There are a lot of people in the forum that seem to be looking for project trucks. I wish I had the additional funds and time to take something with "issues" and turn it into an awesome rig. As for your question, just be honest with anyone that is interested, and definitely don't hide any major deficiencies.

Dude, forget the rig, the bigger issue is you having to move back in with your folks. I had to do the same thing many moons ago, good luck.

Hopefully your intent is to not screw anybody. You need to be honest and divulge all issues. Think about how you would want to be treated if you were on the otrher end of the deal.


List up your issues and maybe we can help coprrect a few minor and in-expensive problems and keep this thread tech.

On the other matter, at least you aren't married with a couple of kids. Now is the best time to find out its not going to work. It hurts, it sucks but it would have hurt a lot more with all the cots, legal and parental issues.

Alright so here are my problems with it:
P401 is fixed with a resistor
Upper oil pan is cracked and has been holding without leaking for the past almost 8 months now
No front bumper
Rear cargo area doesn't have the plastic covers, it's just a matted floor and bare metal under the sliding windows
Various dents of different damage levels
Rear windshield sprayer doesn't work
No caster correction
Wiring harness was partially melted and it idles oddly the first 2 minutes in very cold weather
Steering box leaks on occasion
No flares

It does have:
33" tires that measure out an actual 33". They rub on occasion
OME Medium Lift
Slee tcase plate
CDL/Pin7
New bumpstops, new TREs
Solid Rock sliders
118k miles

Basically it's a daily driver/cheap trail truck that doesn't look the greatest. I really only hope to get at least $5k out of it, doubtful at this point. I've always been very honest about the cars I've sold in the past - sure I've sold them for less than they would normally go for from someone else but I don't like to screw people. I just quit my job too, so it'll be fun to find something new again.

I just traded in my '97 in better shape for $5600. It had more miles, but was very straight stock and looked good. The Toyota dealership sold it for $8000 within a week. I advertised it here and on Craigslist for two weeks, got a couple calls on the Craigslist but no real offers. If it had lockers it might've done better. Yours has clearly been off-roaded, and has numerous issues even an enthusiast would be leary of. You won't get enough from it to buy a decent Camry, so keep it. If you get a job with a big commute then sell it.

A commute wouldn't kill it, I drove 600mi a week for a year with this damn thing. I just want to go back to my roots an buy another sports car... and I can afford what I want now, I just can't keep two cars. I guess I'll just take what I can get.

Try eBay with reserverd and see what it can bring you. You don't have to sell if you don't like what you see anyway.

My local Craig'slist has a '91, 200K with 33's and ARB non-winch for sale for 5K but it's been there for several months.

It doesn't sound like that bad of a rig. If its rust free, the mileage is pretty low and its a '97.

I think it would make someone a good project, if they wanted a wheeler and didn't care too much about how the body looked. Most of the stuff sounds pretty minor to me.

The upper oil pan crack and why the steering box leaks with that low of mileage would concern me, though. I would be worried about more unseen damage.

The upper oil pan crack resulted from old bumpstops in the front which allowed the front axle to over travel in to the pan. Bumpstops were replaced with new when I installed the OME lift. The steering box leak started the day after I lifted the truck/stuck 33's on. It comes and goes, a few drops every two or three months.

If it has lockers, make sure you point that out in your ad in a big way.

Geez, too bad you don't wanna get the plastic for the inside, and toss a bumper on it. You'll probably want to keep it after that. Everything else seems to be general maintenance.
Slow up on all the decisions a little, you'll find another chick or 2....

Agreed. An enthusiast might overlook these but he will never sell it to a "regular" buyer like this. Get the obvious stuff like this fixed first if you plan to get a fair price.

What a waste , in Venezuela you could sell it as it's for at least $15K and may be more in Bolivia or Ecuador

For 15k I'd drive myself down there and drop it off. Find me a buyer for anything remotely close to that number and I'll seriously do it.
