Hello .. I have searched and haven't found if anyone has sourced and replaced the spindle bushing with a spindle roller bearing in the older style of spindle eg the bushing spindle.

I believe I have the appropriate parts (the bearings - actually closer to needle bearings in cages - and a pair of "short" bushings to press on top of the bearing).. wanted to know if anyone had done this modification satisfactorily. Plan to regrease the front end components before winter and would consider sticking these bits in if it is an acceptable option.

While the older style brass bushings are sourceable on their own, IIRC, the newer needle bearing in the newer bushings are not sourceable on their own and only come with a new spindle.

Dan will probably confirm this soon.

Thanks much...hoping that Dan will have a comment as well on this issue. The part 2 of the question is whether the older "housing" accepts the parts as a "drop in" or if any machining would be required...

If you mean "will the older brass bushing drop into the older housing"? Yes, though I'd throw the brass bushing into the freezer for a bit before trying to put the new bushing into the housing.

The older housing will not need to be machined to accept a new bushing.

Thanks for the tip on freezing the bushing first... actually I was wondering (trying to confirm) if the new needle bearing cage and shorter bushing (that I believe I have in my box of parts marked Toyota) would fit into the older spindle without major mods...

I think we're getting semantically confused here. Let me try again:

A new bushing for an older style spindle will drop in fine with no extra machining.

A newer style needle bearing bushing will not drop into an older style spindle. You would have to have some machine work done to it for it to fit an older style spindle housing.

I'm sure you could get a machine shop to take a newer style needle bearing and get it to fit an older style spindle housing. That said, the newer style needle bearings are not sourceable from Toyota on their own. They only come when you buy an entire spindle assy.

Is that clearer?

Thanks...much clearer. I understand that I can replace my existing bushing with a new bushing if required.

However I have the needle bearings and the short bushings (really caps to retain the bearing cage in the spindle I guess) all in Toyota parts bags . Don't have the spindle off of my '97 to see if the parts I have will or will not fit.

Thanks for the clarification...btw how were you able to confirm that the interior dimensions of the new and old spindles are different...thanks again.

I would use a digital caliper with an "inside" measuring capability and compare the findings which you could then take to a machine shop for them to bore the spindle housing as needed, if you went that route.

You're right ... don't think I would consider machining my current spindles without looking pretty carefully at the new spindle ... in my case - to do that I would have to buy one ...then why not just use the new one:).. oh well..

wonder if anyone has had experience modifying the old spindles ??

Not that I know of.

Mainly because it's probably just more cost effective to buy the new spindles with the needle bearing bushings already installed in them. That's what I did and am quite happy with the results of the new spindles. Well worth the price for an important front end component.

The needle bearing and "short" bushing found in the later spindle are not serviced. You have to buy the new style spindle to get them.

You can buy replacement bushings for the original style spindle.
 
Whats with that, Dan? Is this current?
Is 105srs and 79srs really that different?
The roller bearing and bush come in the major overhaul kit for 105s and 79s, and Im pretty sure Ive got them seperatly before as well, when I ordered them before realising they were in the kit.
It will be a while before Im back at work to check.

I would certainly like to learn more about the Australian spindles/roller bearings/bushings... is it possible that the Australian spindles (bare) have the same part number as the N American older style bushing spindle?? I guess I can dream eh? thanks again

We have no way of knowing because the spindle is a superceeded number in this country and there are no replacement parts listed for it.

The new number is 43401-60080. If that number is an original number for a 105 and the 105 book shows replacement parts for that part numbered spindle, then they are available in that market.

Can someone measure the OD of the bearing surface of an 80 birf? - where the bush or needle roller bearing runs? - I dont have any 80 stuff anymore.
Is it 33.5mm?
Also, is the largest diameter of the "bush - solid" 55mm? - across the thrust face?

I may have to buy the bushings to measure them... gonna measure the "short" bushing I have tonight and the OD of the needle bearing cage... maybe look for a part number with a magnifying glass...
any luck yet Matt??

Maybe not getting bushing too soon!.. $112 each and only one available in Canada..yipes!! Wonder what the sensible crossborder shopper could get one for??

Bushings

The spindle bushing for the 80 is the same as for the 60 series. The 60 series ones rarely (never) wear out as they are part time 4wd. Look for secondhand ones and if you are careful you can get them out without damaging them.

Watching this thread to see what happens. I have already upgraded my snatchblock from a bush to a drawn cup needle roler bearing and would consider doing this for the spindle bushes as well if it was technically do-able.
