Hello, my truck has an annoying thing when you hit 3rd gear of the automatic transmission. It goes full power through first and 2nd gear, then when it drops to 3rd and im cruising around 40 it surges and has intermittent power. 4th gear seems OK, maybe slight surging. Tranny fluid is full and fresh. Could this be a differential issue or symptoms of tranny failure? Original drive train has 217k but excellent maintenance records.

Also the engine has a slight ticking. Maybe sticky lifters? Anything that can be done with that? Thanks

easiest way I know to tell you to fix it is...find a cheapo with a blowed, or going to blow motor. Buy if for a couple hundred and swap it....

you ever have dirt under your nails?

I'm not much on AT's, but I think you've washed out clutch material...

errr, and WELCOME!!! :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2: < newb saaaaaalllute! :D

oh what the ell, I'm in a giving mood....:flipoff2:

Thanks! What is clutch material?

(gonna be rusty) AT's have small clutches (clutch packs) in them that are somehow involved with shifting. Each one is surfaced sorta like sand paper. And as the ATF gets changed (along with how the tranny is used/ abused) it washes away the clutch material...

I'm not doing ant good explaining this. Don't worry, I won't be the only one to diagnose you problem. Just hold on, I'm sure everybody's watching a biscuit and with any luck, gravy, right now and not their monitors :flipoff2:

I'm with Hilux, sounds like the clutches are slipping in 3rd.. causing the surging.... Check the FAQ thread here, and find the 93 factory service manual. In it there will be troubleshooting info for the AT.

And welcome! :flipoff2: Hehe

Ya I'm thinking the 3rd gear clutches are worn out and now slipping. How many miles on it? Have you ever pulled the pan and taken a look at the screen and magnets inside?

The ticking sound is either the valves needing adjustment, or it could be the injectors.
