I'm getting ready to swap in a rebuilt power steering pump so I thought I'd take a peek at the smog pump while it is all apart. I pulled the 2 halves apart and i think some parts are missing. Not sure why anybody would have removed parts then put back together but here's a few pics to show there are no guts inside the pump. One half has the rotating hub and the other half just has this axle post. I checked all my FSM's and I can't find any assy views of the pump. This might explain all the friggen emissions problems I've had since I've owned the truck. Any parts missing?

Your smog pump is a greasy, gutless wonder. No offense!

Look at the one SpankyPete rebuilt. It should have these fins in there. And all that grease in yours is indicative of either it being greased heavily when they removed the guts, or the PS pump leaking (which is why it needed to be gutted in the first place).

Sent pump into "Kovi" @ Rebuilding Factory: Your Part, Rebuilt, Fast!
He said an estimated rebuild price would be around $100. Spent $10 and shipped it out to Cali. I called him this week to check on it and he said it would be $275 because all the guts are missing.
Then DSLToy hooked me up with a used pump for a few :beer:s. I spun it around a bit and could tell there were at least some parts inside although I could feel rubbing and it wouldn't spin over 360 degrees freely without stopping. Since my truck has been down for 2 weeks now I've been spinning the legs to get to work. Thought I would inspect this pump out at lunch time today so I strapped it to the handlebars. On the way in to work I rode past the O'Reily's so I thought WTH, i'll stop in and see what they can price up. They had a rebuilt factory unit for $145 + $35 core. I went ahead and ordered one but I made sure it was for sure a factory rebuild and not a crappy aftermarket. I won't count my chickens just yet but I'll let you know what it looks like in a couple days.

The pump that Napa tried to sell me was of a different core design and used rubber hoses to simulate the inlet and outlet fittings on the OEM. I rejected the first one, and they told me they couldn't get any others that used the correct core. I went to another autoparts store and got an A1 cardone that used a similar core to OEM. My last A1 cardone lasted 40K miles before it siezed.

thanks, that's why i'm not counting my chickens just yet. we will see.

I had similar results at Napa. They ordered the unit twice for me. Both times it came with a pic of the correct pump on the box, but a totally different pump in the box. Their warehouse refused to crack open the third box and confirm before shipping, so I went elsewhere.

I hope I get better than 40k out of the Cardone I got from Napa's competitor!

Picked up 3 new belts and the rebuilt pump tonight. Just finished everything and you can really hear the pump winding up. Looks like an oem rebuild to me. I'm planning on stopping by the emissions test place tomorrow just to see how she does. At least i don't have to freeze my butt off on the bike anymore:D

That's great! I think mine is getting ready to crap out. It's making some strange sounds periodically. We don't have O'Reily's around here, how can you tell its an OEM rebuild? I would like to retain all the emissions equip, so a desmog is not an option.
Thanks
