I hope this topic hasn't already been discussed a dozen times over, but I honestly can't find one on this forum or others.

I did come across one thread on exploroz.com, without pictures, and it's apparently on top of the transfer and very hard to reach.

I put my camera on top of the transfer case and took a picture, can anyone tell me if they can see it?

the transfer case breather is on the front "half" of the split case. it's on top on the left-hand side. Circled in red in the picture below.

Aha. Thanks for the picture.

So, on my transfer, that's this thing right here:

I think it is. So, if I understand it correctly, it's the breather cap, without a hose?
But otherwise the same as on the diffs?

yes it just has a breather cap, it sits high enough that they figured it didnt need a line on it and if it had one there isnt really anywhere for it to go, in fact it sits higher than the diff breather lines do. i ran my front diff breather to the bottom of the hood in my engine bay and the rear up as high and into a corner as i could go and the transfer case breather is still higher than my rear diff breather.

If you pop the cap off what are you left with. I'm pretty sure I've filled mine with water again and I want to fix it once and for all. Will I be able to sneak a hose onto it while its still on the truck? I'll then route it forward to the engine bay or maybe into some sort of expansion container. Need to do something. Water to the headlights seems to get in everything but the engine.

Thanks for the info guys.

And those are very useful threads. Seeing a breather extension and also the plate above the transfer removed.

Just in case you are unfamiliar with how things should look under the carpet...

Ah, not so fast. That plate removed is not the regular access panel. That's custom. Yours will look MUCH smaller and you do not get a direct view of the breather from the stock panel. I assume you drive a 60 and have intact carpet. If so, when you pull yours (may not want to), that big hole is not what you will be seeing. If you're thinking what I think you're thinking, unless you have other (compelling) reasons, I'd not just whip out the grinder and start cutting.

Hi Tofudebeest, you're absolutely right.

I'd already posted before I took a closer look. Only then I realised it was custom.
I happen to have the carpet out right now, just to check for rust and do a bit of cleaning. And no, I don't plan to alter the 60 in any way. I kinda like it stock. But thanks for the warning.

(I also found $2.40 in change under the carpet, as well as lots and lots of dirt, sand, soil, spilled drinks, evidence of a very rotten fish left there for a while, long ago. )
