Splitcase to transmission seal, which direction is the seal supposed to face?

I just disassembled mine and the inside of the seal was facing toward the transmission. I know my transfer case oil was pumping into the tranny. If that's the case, logic tells me that the inside of the seal should face the transfer case.
Factory service manual doesn't indicate which direction the seal should go in.
Which is the correct way?

Get the double seal so it seals in both directions.

I assume you are talking about the rear output shaft. Seal should face towards the t-case, preventing oil from flowing out from the adaptor and into the t-case. I'm not really sure how that center bearing within the adapter case gets adequate lube, but that's they way it is. I suppose it flows along the shaft out from the aft transmission bearing.

I asked the same question in a recent thread was was told that the inside (open side) of the seal should face the transmission. I'm pretty sure mine is installed in that orientation currently, but my oil is leaking from the transmission down into the transfer (again!).

The way you found it, is the way the seal is supposed to be installed.

Can you please provide more information about this seal--that is who makes it and /or where to get it? Thanks.

Seal #BW3386E MFG by NOK MAF has this seal in stock

I hope the pics help.

My ToyBox came with a red seal and Marlin recommended that I grind the trans side of the seal just down to the metal. This moves the spot where the seal contacts the surface farther forward. He also reconnended roughing up the seal surface on the gear with 500 or 600 grit emory cloth.

Replacement time for the seal again.

I have in hand a 62 style double lip seal. It came from Marlin. The OD is too small for the 1982 transfer case. I found a front case from a 1983 that has a smaller opening and the 62 seal fits. The opening's width is 9MM and the seals width is 10.8 MM. I wouldn't think there would be a problem if the seal protrudes out of the hole as long as it is in straight.

Anyone ever put the 62 seal in an 83 to early 85 transfer case?

Anyone ever mate an 83 or newer front case to an 81 or 82 rear case and internals?

Right now deciding if it's worth the trouble to clean up the 83 front so the double lip seal can be used if it's possible.

Also does anyone know the steel ball dia that goes between the trans output shaft and the sleeve the seal rides on? I'm guessing 6mm to 8mm.

Sorry I dont have the part number; but get a Viton seal-these are reddy/brown colour, and get the one with the dual direction knurling on the inner lip.I work at a bearing and seal shop, the type of seal I have just described are the premium version for this type of application.
Or just get the transfer tube between filler plug holes, and bugger the hard work......

Personal preference here, but I would avoid mixing parts to make a frankenstein case. Get the appropriately sized seal for your application. Down the line you or someone working on it may get confused if things have been swapped about.

I have a replacement stock seal on my '84, and it does the job.

It's been unpredictable. Sometimes it will pump oil into the tranny, other times the transfer case overfills. Getting tired of pulling the transfer case apart and changing out the seal every two years. Now I'm determined to use the double lip 62 seal. The 83 front case will be used.

The 62 seal fits well in the 83 case and makes proper contact on the surface of the gear shank.

See pic below. 82 case is on top, 83 case below. Part of the problem might be the 82 case has only ONE dowel hole and dowel pin. It doesn't seem likely the case and the seal bore would get perfectly centered with the transmission output shaft. There is play between the bolts and the holes in the case.

The dowel improvement, the smaller seal bore and a switch for a 4WD lamp in the dash seem to be the only difference between the 82 and 83 cases. The 83 and newer cases with two dowels should center it perfectly.

I have a good feeling problem will be solved.
