When setting the pinion preload, do you measure the resistance while the pinion is turning, or what it takes to overcome the fri ction to get it to turn? To get mine to turn, it takes about 20 inch/lbs...but while turning, it is around 5 inch/lbs.

Which is the reading to trust?? This will be my front diff, so it isn't hugely critical, but I'd like to not have to do it over!

Thanks! and Cheers!

to get it turning..

So, that initial stiffness is O.K?........kinda like my knees in the morning :)

Yep, got any other stiff joints?? O.K., it turns pretty smoothly, no slop, these are new bearings, so there should not be any slop!
Cheers!
