Cruiser PTO's do not mount on the transmission, although some 4-speeds look like they have a cover for one, it is really just an inspection hatch. PTO's either mount on the side or the rear (at end of tranny output shaft) of the transfer. Here is a pic of the normal one mounting on the side. Front is to the right. There is a front and rear output on them:

I have seen that inspection cover listed as a PTO cover in Toyota literature. But there is no gear there to drive a PTO. Maybe in some earlier application that shared the tranny case?

Along with the more common side mount box, there is also an OEM rear drive PTO off the back of the T/C. Used in firetrucks.

i had several of those old 4 speeds with the side pto cover ,as mark said the gears wont work.the bolt pattern is the same as a pile of pto,s i have but no gear to line up with.you would have to use an sm 420 or 465 to get that option.then you would need a forward and reverse pto unless your farming or running a hydraulic unit.good luck

Thanks To all for the response,
I was thinking along the same lines as you all have stated. I just wanted to make sure before I give this transmission away as part of a sale.
I am going with a sm420 with a trany pto instead. I just have to remove it from the my friends truck as soon as it get a little warmer. The good thing is the pto is already bolted to this sm420. The whole thing will be installed between a 22r and a toy mini case.
Thanks, now I can sell this h42 and not wonder.

FJ25 uses a transmission mounted PTO. No special gear in the transmission for the PTO. It's a four speed transmission. To use it you have to put the transmission in neutral. I'm not convinced Toyota never made a PTO for the H42 transmission. Why would would they call it a PTO cover instead of a inspection cover in the Land Cruiser manual.

Here's a picture of the FJ25 PTO and a single direction PTO on a SM420, the second pic may interest you. I was going to replace this one with a reversible PTO. I haven't had a chance to measure if it will fit, but that PTO is huge. I'll never get around to using it anyhow. :meh:
