what about 60 series diffs under your 40 or 105 series diff under it if you can get hold of them .The track width tricks the eye because it has the aftermkt wider front fenders on it

Widening stock FJ40 40 axle assy is like throwing money away. The stamped steel pieces will not hold up. I don't know what a custom length axle shaft woudl cost but i'll be it is not cheap.

Go and find a set of full width axles and install them if you want 7" wider axles. Look at a older chevy blazer. It will have the passenger side drop front axle assy and still have the same bolt pattern as your wheels.

Actually the ford 9" had a stamped steel housing and was available in full width F150's and many other applications so the stamped housings do hold up. Early Blazers would have a GM 12 bolt and a Dana 44.
smaller 8.8", 8.5" ring gear ... no real upgrade there.., A standard 44 housing doesn't gain you much, a 44 heavy would give you more load capability but you'd end up with an 8 bolt rim unless you go custom hubs .
Since Bobby Long is in the works for building custom shafts, widening the front is no longer too big an issue, 3 1/2" inches per side wouldn't be excessive ( I wouldn't recommend too much more)

widening the tracks

thank, the other option that i am exploring is installing a 80 series rear and front. this option puts me about 4 inches narrower that what i want in the rear. this is probably the easiest option. how wide is the 105 axel?

if the 7 inches that i want to extend my 40 series axels is too much, maybe the the other option is to take a 80 series axels and extend them by 4 inches.

i would like to get in touch with Bobby Long if you have that information.

widening the track of my build is the next phase of my build so i very much appreciate the options, i would like to get this done in the next couple of months.

i just got back from a 3000 mile ride and i am now convince that i have to do this.

by the way do you know why the front axel wide of a 40 series is 4 inches wider that the rear, i am certain it is for stability and turning purposes.. just want to confirm

thanks :bounce::bounce2:

Howdy! Sounds like an intersting project, but adding that much wheel width kind of defeats the purpose of having a nice, narrwow rig that fits where full sized ones won't go. What kind of driving/wheeling do you do that has that much of a stability problem. Ride and handling can be smoothed out a lot by changing springs and shocks. My rig is pretty tall, and it handles just fine on the street and trail. John

agree, however the rear bed of my cruiser is 80 inches wide. i am trying to take advantage of this situation by widening the tracks.

Custom axle shafts aren't too bad. I did a narrowed FJ80 rear full float in the last year and double splined axle shafts were around $800 a pair:cheers:.

do you know someone that makes custom axel shaft? my other option is to lengthen an 80 series axel shaft by 3 inches. :bounce::bounce2:

that is a great looking cruiser, where did you get an after market wider fender? i am gonna need one after i do my conversion. also i am thinking of an 80 series because it is wider, did you mean 100 series, do you know anyone that has done this conversion? what is the difference in the wide and the location of the differential between a 80 series and the 100 series... thanks

What i mean by 100and 105 is the 100 has ifs and the 105 has a solid front diff 105's like the 80 series front diff.
i dont think you guys got the 105's??
The 100 series rear diff is wider than the 105 series diff when they bought the ifs out in the 100 its wider than the solid front diff so the ifs 100 series got wider rear diff to match the front (unlike the track on the new 7x series lol) hence the 105 series cruiser's rims having more lip /offset on the rim and the 105 is wider than the 80 series i would def stick to the 80 series diff just for the 6 studs but then
Wouldnt the 60 series be the easiest mate, then you can have a wide front diff to

i can measure my 105 diff disk to disk or what ever next time im at the work shop if you need mate

Btw sorry mate i dont know who did this conversion im not to sure who makes the wider guards but ive seen a few 4x series on ebay au and carsales.com.au with them maby if you search them you can ask the sellers or so mate and the uzj100 and fzj80 series that i measured of have the same length diff bars from diff to chassis,so i presume the 105 would be same to

Try a set of j10 axles dana 44 only problem is centered rear axle.

Not if you get the Dana 44 that came with the QuadraTrac. Offset to passenger side.

80 series axles are already 62" wide... which is the magic 7" wider than 40 series axles you are looking for.

The guy who did my rear axle shafts was:
Bill Rowlette
916-628-9364

He is located up in Placerville, CA

thanks called him left him a message. Fj404life posted a picture of my cruiser above (thx fj404life) as you can see the rear of my cruiser is 80 inches wide, i am trying to get my wheelbase to match that wide. which mean i also need to widen the axel front. my front wheelbase is currently 4 inches wider than the rear and i want to keep it that way. which mean i will need to widen each of my axel shaft and housing by 3 inches. with my tire wide included this will get me to 80 inches wide in the rear and 84 inches wide in the front.

with this set up i will also need to widen my front fender by 6 to 7 inches

thank you all, very helpful :bounce::bounce2:

here is the new look of the Nulla, as you can see the pop top now open from the front with an all new aluminum "camper shell". we plan to get rid of the roof ten once we are done enclosing the pop top, we realize that it is not really needed for two people the pop top is sufficient for now. it is a very comfortable tent and has served us very well.

we are now focus on widening the track and this tread has been very useful thanks :bounce::bounce2:
