Howdy folks,

I have a 1970 FJ55 with the original F engine. Last year, after driving 600+ miles in a weekend and wheelin' the McGrew Trail Ride, my poor piggy started burning/leaking oil horribly on the way home. We made it about 50 miles away from home, out of a few hundred miles. Not bad. While driving, I noticed my oil pressure guage begin to drop, which of course concerned me. I pulled over (first of several times that day) and noticed I was leaking/burning through my oil. I tossed a couple quarts in a went on my merry way (still probably a hundred or so miles away from home). We ended up having to keep pulling over and tossing more oil into the truck a few more times. We just wanted to get home and didn't really know what else to do. The engine had been tired for years and I had always dreamed of swapping in a different engine. Anyhoo, while driving we finally heard a somewhat catostrophic sounding, metal on metal sorta crunching, and then loss of performance, pull over to the side of the highway, etc. sorta thing. Cool.

That's when we finally decided to call AAA. That got us home the rest of the way and my poor pig has been sitting in the garage, un-loved since last July. I had high hopes of tossing a newer 2F engine in in its place but have not found one local enough yet and funds have been very tight since the incident.

Is there anyway to tell by listening to the engine and knowing some of the history leading up to the incident what went wrong with my engine and what I need to check/replace? I assumed originally that my bearings finally gave up. If so, should I bother dropping the oil pan to swap 'em out? I suppose I should at least drop the pan and take a look. I am afraid I may have done damage to the cylinder walls or the crank or??? Do you guys think its a total waste of time trying to cheaply fix the tired 'ol F engine, instead of saving and looking for a 2F swap? Oh yeah, I'm not interested in a V8 swap but I like diesels. Of course a diesel swap is cost prohibitive for me at this time.

I'm rambling now...Here's a link to a short vid with the noise I'm referring to. Any advice is welcome.

The vid sounds like a rod bearing that's trying to spin. Not good.

Recommendation: pull & inspect spark plugs. check compression.

If plugs and/or compression is bad, then time for engine swap.

If plugs look OK & compression is passable, then pull oil pan and inspect crank. Might be possible to change rod bearings, replace oil pump and drive it some more.

x2 you didn't mention smoking so i'm thinking bottom end as well

Carlos; X 3 on beginning to spin a rod bearing........DON'T drive it any more if you are planning to repair it......check compressions and if OK pull the motor and check the lower end; might get by with a set of new bearings if the journals are not scored!.......a dirty fix but might get you going for a while..cheaply!

Thanks everyone for the respones. I will motivate and drop the pan and inspect everything. I am curious to see exactly what has happened. I may go ahead with a swap of an inexpensive/good runnin' 2F donor, hopefully found locally. I do have a 2F sitting in pieces in the garage that I may 'build' as well eventually. I will keep ya'll posted on my progress. Thanks again for all the advice, I really appreciate it.

Cheers, Carlos.

If it came on all-of-a-sudden, I'd check the PCV valve......first. JMO:)

Well, there were definitely symptoms before the 'incident'. The engine has never enjoyed highway speeds, but I also attribute that to the 3 spd...It leaked for years, and I have replaced most of the gaskets while owning the rig. It wasn't much of a smoker, but I always had to keep an eye on the oil.

Thanks Degnol for the idea, I'll check it.
