I'm trying to get an idea of what my PTO gear is worth. When I bought my 40, the winch was broke (two of the mounts were snapped, dumbass PO). Anyhow, I have powersteering and the PO jerryrigged the PTO to work by mounting inside the frame rails and notching the stock bumper. As much as I would like to use it, doesn't seem to be worth it.

So I'm trying to round up some cash for my upcoming engine/trans swap and I was going to sell the PTO gear box from the 3 speed transfer, the two driveshafts (although the u-joint is broke) and the winch.....if anyone wants it. What is this stuff worth? I see complete kits going for 600-700 bucks, but seeing how some of my parts are broke, I doubt I can get that and may be better to junk some of it and sell the rest.

Are the broken mounts on the gearbox (driver's side) of the winch?

I'd be glad to purchase the drive shafts. That's the from the PTO gearbox flange to the winch head including the very last "U" joints on each end.

I can pick up in the summer.

Only makes sense that the broken mounts would be on the gearbox side of the winch, but if not, i'd like the gearbox or whole winch, if we can work out a deal. Suppose this should be on a pm...

I started a small collection of PTOs and winches for some reason, even though I have a Warn electric. (cruiser addiction I guess). I think the last I paid was around $175 for a PTO and $250 for a winch. I've seen PTOs go for a less and winches for more. The drive shafts seem very hard to come by. I rarely see the linkage, shifters, and pillow block (mounted on the frame rail above the front axle). Hard to gauge the price of them, probably more than you expect for someone doing a restoration. Who knows tho - economy is pretty soft. If you pull the t-case save the PTO gear and the narrow spacer from the input shaft and replace them with a single wide spacer from a non-PTO t-case. Otherwise they're $50 or so at spector. I've read u-joints are same as some older toyota cars, or may the fj55/fj60 steering - can't remember now so that might not be a big deal. I thought complete kits were more like $1k+ but I haven't been keeping track lately. Too bad the winch is broken. Cheers.

If the u-joint is the same as fj55/60 steering column u-joints, that matches the drive-shaft u-joint for a 1rst gen Corolla, 1200 cc.
i just read that in another post so i compared 55 steering ujoint to a pto ujoint and they are not the same good luck

Just because it was so darned ugly and the weather is so nice, I just went down and pulled the winch off . Had to torch all that blobby weld off, ground everything down nice and clean and now i have a better view. I also read an article online about cast iron vs cast steel as far as repairs are concerned. The test they gave was to take a cold chisel to it somewhere and try to take a shaving off of it... cast steel should be able to get a curled shaving to some extent, but cast iron just chips.. Well, couldnt get a hint of a shaving , just tiny chips, and the breaks were very grainy.. so I'm thinking it's cast iron by that method... I found some 1/2x 1 1/2 bar stock and wondering about making tabs from that. grind down the casting til it's 1/2" down and square, and then bolting the new tabs on with maybe 2) 5/16 fhms, one above the other. then weld where I can reach in between there.Sort of a hybrid of Pinheads idea. Unfortunately, I'm attatching to the end of an 'i beam' section, but most of that may be ground off. Perhaps I should be concentrating on what really matters like finishing up under the hood so I can get that 2f in there....

Oh, and terrx.... trade ya a 4spd with split xfer case for a winch......ok, I'll throw in a case of your favorite beer.

Obviously I thought I was responding in my winch gearcase thread about the cast steel etc... and I'm not even drinking...... yet.:o

There are most definitely NOT the same! The Corolla/55 steering "U" joint is 04371-10011 and the PTO "U" joint is 04371-60020 and they are different. I have both here side by side because I thought as you did and was wrong!! The Corolla "U" joint is much smaller!! The PTO "U" joint is a bronze bearing not roller bearing as is usual for "U" joints.

I'll be replacing the PTO "U" joint in the '55 next week.

Can you show us a picture of the side by side?

OK, here's a picture. The one wrapped is for the early Corolla the one unwrapped and larger is for the PTO "U" joint.

Also, the PTO joint is greaseable and the other is not.
