Any news on alternatives to Toyota WS ATF?

Have you changed your WS ATF yourself? The procedure in the FSM is a bit complicated. I guess the best is to do the exchange through the cooler hoses, and then check the overfill plug.
How was the fluid - after how many miles?
Anyone with experience with an alternative to the Toy WS fluid?

Just got a new cruiser, a 2004 HDJ100 with the A750 auto box. The ATF smells burnt, and looks bad.

PS
Yes, I have searched, and read all the relevant threads.

No alternatives to type WS AFAIK. The previous spec T4 is now available as Mobil type 3309 ATF, so maybe Mobil may come out with a WS fluid as well as soon as the ?exclusivity deal? with Toyota runs out.

The spec sheet has a comment saying that the Maxlife ATF does not meet the viscosity requirement of the Toyo WS fluid. See attached pdf.
The FSM says specifically that you might get cavitation in the pump in low temperatures if you don't use the WS fluid. Looks like they are saying OK to use ATF IV if you never have low temperature, or if you think it is ok to use some time on warming up before driving.

The new Amsoil ATL full-synthetic fuid is recommended for WS.

AMSOIL - Synthetic Low Viscosity Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATL)

I've been running their ATF and have been very pleased.

What about the Red Line D6 ATF?
Looks good on paper. I.e. the viscosity ##.

Problem with Amsoil is that I can't find any importer or dealer in Norway.

Guess that not many has experience with any of these ATFs, or has changed WS fluid and can report on how the WS looks after X k miles.

So why do the wackers say on their product info overview page "Recommended for use where DEXRON, DEXRON II, III and VI, Toyota T-IV and WS," without any asterisk or mention that it actually does not conform!
This false advertising really is a PITA.

However, unless things are really cold then it won't be a problem, otherwise you would have to a wait a few minutes for it to warm up. This is why T-IV was changed to WS, so I doubt much of a problem.

Maxlife was on special at half the normal ripoff price here locally, so I tried to buy some but none in stock. I was going to change from T-IV to WS, but will stay with T-IV now until I can ge some cheap

The Redline D6 should be very good by reputation but I have no personal experience.

I've been running Mobil 1 ATF for the last 85K with no problems. I just drain the pan with each oil change and refill the approx 4 quarts that come out.

Is Mobil 1 claiming that it's suitable for WS applications ?

No. It says Toyota T-III & T-IV? Now you've got me worried??? I used Mobil 1 blindly because I've been using it for years in all my vehicles in the engine, tranny, transfer case, diffs, etc. Always had good luck. I've even heard a few people say not to use synthetics in this tranny since it wasn't designed for it???

I don't think your 2000 is a WS transmission. The Mobil 1 is great for DexIII (T-III) or T-IV.

I think/hope you're right. Like I said, no problems. Just want to make sure I run whatever is "the best" for it for longevity. The cost is so close on all the different products it really isn't an issue.

.
Nobody checked their WS fluid???
.

What I hate on the newer Cruisers that use WS trans fluid is that there is no dip stick......

Toyota says 100,000 miles normal driving, or around I think it was 60K for 'Hard Use'.... like lots of towing.

sorry for plain question ;)
how can i easily check the ATF for smell and colour ?
can i do it without any special tools?
You undo the overflow plug.
See illus. in attached 20 p diagnostics for the A750 trans. for the diesel.

Just think of it as a safety cap designed to protect the foolish from themselves rather than as an insult to you. ;)

I heard Matthew Crawford today on the radio call it the "mechanical infantilization" of our culture.

Although I like the dipstick on mine (2003), no dipstick means no chance of any contamination, and if anyone else services your vehicle that is a very big chance.
