You need to recal the VGRS system. The repair manual does not explain the process very well in my opinion. It’s a little bit of an art… “guess and check.”
IF your alignment is good, then do the following to get your steering wheel centered again:
Drive your vehicle above 25 miles an hour (for 5 seconds or longer) on a relatively straight road. As accurately as possible note the steering wheel position when the vehicle is driving as straight as possible.
Park your vehicle carefully with the steering wheel in the same orientation that gave you straight line driving and leave the engine on. Connect your scan tool and open GTS. Go to system select>VGRS>utility> re-center steering wheel (I think that’s what it’s called).
Follow the instructions on the utility screen. The steering wheel will feel like it “disconnects” from the steering column, and you can then easily turn the steering wheel into the correct position (straight ahead) and then the next screen will lock the wheel in that orientation. After that it will perform quick calibration and then it will exit the utility.
Once it finishes the calibration, leave the scan tool connected and go for a little drive. The steering wheel is probably not going to be perfect just yet, and you may have to repeat this several times! Make sure you get above 25 miles an hour when checking your re-centering results because that is when the steering wheel center point becomes “valid” to the system.
Like I said, it’s “guess and check.”
