I wanted to do a write up of my low cost storage solution, an idea taken from other forum members, thanks maddbaggins. Next week I will be taking a long trip, so later I will report how well it holds.
Cost of Mod was about $150.
Supplies:
1 sheet of plywood.
2 L brackets from home depot
some bolts, washers and tee nuts.
speaker box carpeting
1 can of 3M spray adhesive
rope tie down clamps
self tapping screws
qty 2 of 66 quart wheeled underbed boxes
Top 55" wide x 42" deep with the rear corners cut off to fit with the rear pillar. I wanted to be able to break down to storage compartment without having to unscrew dozens of wood screws etc. etc. so I decided to utilize grade bolts at each corner, fastened to small 90 degree brackets on the upright legs.
The uprights are 2 ea 9"x36" and 1ea 9"x24" for the middle. Uprights are sitting on 2 ea L bracket cut to 36" long and 24” respectively. I used 6 self tapping screws to mount the L brackets to the floor.
I used 1/4" x 1" bolts and 1/4" x 5/16" tee nuts to secure the uprights to the L bracket and 1/2" wood screws with qty 2 roofing V brackets with thin self tapping screws to secure the deck to the middle upright. To secure the outside uprights to the top deck I used L brackets with 1-1/2" bolts. The qty 6 tie downs I got at Napa (rope tie downs and come in qty 4 per packet.)
The axe fits nicely on the outside leg and is held in place by 2 quick fits. Stays in play….Quick fits are fastened by bolts.
I used the wide Velcro strips found at home depot, but I cut them to size (to fit fire extinguisher’s small diameter), than screwed thru the Velcro strips and fastened them to the board. The fire extinguisher is pretty secured.
The top is carpeted with speaker box type carpeting ($25 at a car stereo install place.) I used a 3M multi-purpose adhesive spray and underneath is stapled.
The storage boxes are STERILITE 66 QT, Wheeled Underbed Storage Boxes and measure 39 1/2"L x 20 1/4"W x 7"H
