Thanks for the tip Izzy. Needing to get a rig for my FJ40 and this one will evidently rebroadcast a signal from a HT to hit a repeater out of range of the HT. Your thoughts as I am looking at the Kenwood 74A HT
 
Never used a Kenwood, sorry cant give you any feedback. If you are using the one in the truck for cross repeater, then I am imagining you have the HT out with you, probably hiking or on trails. For that I use a Yaesu vx-6, because they are submersible and highly impact resistant. In my area we have lots of wet forests, so I know when I drop the radio on a muddy hole or stream, it will work.
 
Good point, thanks. You are right, I plan to carry the HT with me since I do a lot of prospecting, rock collecting, hiking, etc. A lot of places have no cell phone coverage and Mrs. HP and I camp in our fifth wheel a lot so need to have some sort of commo in case of an emergency since we are legal guardians of our one year old grandson.
