John - I think you can find a better option out there tahn diamond plate  I think of that as an exterior finish - meant to take heavy abuse. If you can find some of that "poly" or "flex" type paneling w/ a darkened finish, that'd be perfect. I saw some at HD/ Lowes but they were clear & I wasn't sure how it'd take paint :meh: Use some rubber flat washers to deaden any vibrations.

I have the metal ones in my 45. They are colder with your knee leaning against them but aside from that I like never having to replace them or worry about ripping them up

Might try something different? How about "CINTRA" (celtex is a bit cheaper but never liked it much). I used to use a lot of it when I built signs. It's a PVC plastic cast into a sheet. Available in sheets as large as 5x12 feet (or larger?), and thicknesses between 1/16" and 3/4". Also many colors to choose from, but I would stick to Black or white if you don't want it to fade, and both those colors can be cleaned with chemicals like GOOF OFF and won't melt or discolor... It's pretty durable and much more flexible than something like PLexiglass. The thinner stuff can even be cut with a knife (although 1/8" is pushing it...). Drills nice to. If I were going to make some pannels I would try sometihng like the 1/16" or 1/8" in black. It has a slight texture and sheen to it (low luster/ semi gloss). I think it would look bitchin and be quieter/ not as cold as metal ( and as light or lighter in weight than the origional pannels). It's been a year or two since I ordered any, but a sheet of 4x8 foot x 1/8" used to run about $60.

Could call any sign shop or a sign supplier for it...

Someone on here has done the diamond plate aluminum I used to have the link but that computer crashed a while back.

I really don't want to try my hand at doing vinyl myself. I think it'd be too easy to screw up.

Vinyl is easy. Check out when I recovered a cargo panel in my POTM thread. A bit of contact cement and thin foam from an upholstry shop and away you go.

ABS Panels

I am in Stillwater and am looking for some one to help me design ABS door panels for the 75-84 FJ40. What I need is someone willing to let me look at and borrow a set of stock interior door panels. I will use them to build a jig to produce the ABS panels. Here is a link to what I am doing now.

I am not familiar with the Toyota panel so I am not sure if I will need to destroy a set to get what I need.

Anyone with an old junky set of door panels.....this is your chance to get a free set of Black ABS Panels.

Thanks,

Troy,

I'm nowhere near Stillwater, but would be happy to send you mine. Left and right side are identical for front and back doors, but there's also the 2 rear crago panels, and I think there's a difference there. I'd be happy to sacrifice mine to get a new set in the ABS, and I'd be happy to pay shipping both ways.

I used the moldable ABS that you can get from an upholstery supply place. Cut it with a jigsaw with a blade used to cut metal, then stuck it on with two sided tape. I have a picture around some where-- I'll try to get you a link.
