So, John hows your dash? ;) Maybe I'll have to get busy cutting my 70 front end?

hey jon i actually have one that i havent finished, its just a tray w/o the lid, its not installed, just sitting in the shed waiting.
its a great idea that i'd like to see what you come up with.

talking about this, the long range tank thread and others, i went out and poked in the shed, and then in my cruiser scrapbook and realize just how many unfinished or unstarted projects i have, some are so small and inexpensive i dont know whats wrong with me.

:hhmm: Sounds like a rare thing to happen. ;) At least you have a book to remind you of what you forgot. I'd likely loose the book if I rememberd that I had one.

the price will be what it will be, just depends on the shop, the material and the method. i would think that a plain box, no cuts, louvers, holes, bumps, tabs or powder coat would be 1/3rd the price of the FJ40 box you can buy.

if you check out the HVAC shop they prolly would not weld, you could have them do bent tabs and either spot weld or solder them together. you really dont need the tabs but it makes it fast,, the main box should be bent out of one piece and the 4 corners could be soldered or brazed. this is how i made mine.

i would bet most of the guys here would be happy to finish a pre bent unfinished box. most of us, myself included dont have a good means for shear cuts and brake bends in our garage, but can easily weld, braze or solder corners.

16g i think would be overkill, 18g would be great and 20g would do it but the long lip across the front might bend or dent easily unless you get it rolled.

PS, that 45* angle on the face is whats bumping the price up, if you like it thats fine but a square box would be easier/cheaper.

were on the same page for what i meant by one piece of steel for the box,,, one for the box and another for the lid.

the welding tabs i refer to would be a 1/2" extra material in the corners on the inside of the box, you cant even hardly see them, this gives a flat joining surface to be spot welded, or heck even riveted at home. all kinds of boxes are made this way including ammo cans ect.

i hear ya on the small run, check an HVAC shop fo sho, they may be slow and may appreciate the work.
