John - I used 1 X 3 X 3/16" for the added clearance 
over 2 X 4. It's braced to the frame 4X using 2 X 2's - 2 of them are 3/16" wall to mount my cage to. I left ~ 1/2" of a lip to weld to. You'll have a wide seam on the backside of the tube to fill due to uneven body curvature. I had to add & grind to fit some vertically raised strips & sealed it up w/ POR Patch. It's only tacked to the underbody in a few spots. The ends took some work to blend into the body due to heavy oxidation. Don't know if you've seen my build thread but some of the ?'s you're asking can be easily answered there
