when I had your 55, I never moved that lever - because it is a floor shift

Just like a 40.. H-N-L.. when you pull it out, the FD is pulled out as well.. pushed in is H
Its just pull, no twist.
you can remove the lever that forces the FD cable out when you shift to low, so you can have 2L. no need to do anything other than remove two cotter pins and pull the pins and lever.
I just restored my t-case shifter setup(from a 70, going into a non vacuum 72), and a little grease goes along way towards making it move nearly effortlessly.
