WTF: sumbody shot my dog!

This is not directed at you, as I am assuming you are a responsible dog owner.

But, you said the dog was a rescue. I'll assume that to mean the previous owner was not responsible. And that the shot is old shot working its way to the surface. I'll further speculate that perhaps the previous owner let it run loose and possibly molest farm animals, etc. In which case, in many areas, there is a justifiable and legal reason to shoot the dog. I do not blame the dog, as even though the dog is directly causing the damage, the irresponsible owner set it up.

Personally, I have no qualms about the shooting of dogs molesting farm animals. But it would be poetic justice if the irresponsible owner got a load of birdshot as well.

Dogs are contained behind 6' chain link, and even when snow drifts lowered it to 3', no evidence of escape. Having lived w/escape artists before, I'm familiar w/ the subtle signs of pushing under a fence.

Snow shows no tracks from jumping over, and the dog initially disliked snow so much that he had to be escorted outside to take care of bizness. city boy!

Shot is small: coworker thinks perhaps a 410 load?

North property line is 40'+ from the fence that my dogs currently occupy; for 3 yrs I lived in a casita w/fence abutting that line, and those dogs never got shot...

The east fence abuts the easement/ bar-ditch and 2 lane rural road, thus the drive-by option.

Dog was seized during a drug raid in town, held for evaluation b/c a couple of chihuahuas were dead/injured, though a husky could have been the culprit. He was scheduled to be put down when NMDR contacted me to foster.

He didn't know how to bark when he first moved in, and still insists on going for car rides every couple days, apparently still doing his delivery rounds. Very little recall when we go to the woods for walks, but he stays within hearing, and comes back to check on us frequently.

I apologize. I thought you said he wandered. Maybe it's because your posts are nearly incomprehensible. Anyway, I hope your dog recovers and there's no repeat performance.

have beaufart come by with his metal detector to find residual shot in the ground to determine where it came from.

So, what you are saying is, you think someone walked up and shot your dog when he was in your yard? If true then that is beyond the pail. Can you walk your fence line for footprints?

a fenced in dog with 26 in an 8" pattern. lets assume 50-75 yards, as the dog is alive and only peppered. the odds of no shot hitting even a chain link are 0.0%. check the fence.

its possible the dog simply went hunting with Cheney.

Sorry to hear that SM...hope the doggy recuperates ok.

My vote is on prior events.

bumpity, for 24h w/o getting shot agin, tho the scabs are starting to come up.

walked the fence: no shiny places on the links, no pellets on the posts. dogs shy'd away from me overall, moreso as I worked my way south. NOT normal behavior for them: they usually bustle and fuss around.

chatted up the other corner store, and popped in to visit w/the north neighbor: he heard nuttin, was gonna mention they been barking last night, and seemed genuinely aggrieved. Told him I had 'cameras up' and that I'd be open carrying: he was concerned about what'd happen if I shot someone. Told him not to worry, just call 911.

Might've implied that being in public safety would help me get a fair deal. Some thoughts about the use of deadly force if a weapon was discharged towards me or mine.

So now I don't know what to think, besides that the CZ is a comfortable weight upon my hip.

Apology accepted. I stand by my previous statement about lawyers understanding my language (until I need one, of course). :p

His energy was way huge the day after pellet removal: played 3x as long w/ the other dog, total goofy face happy dog. Didn't realize how stoic he was, which makes injuries even that more difficult to observe.

Some photos, cuz what good's a thread w/o pix? ;)

what I pulled out before I called the vet (minus a pellet that jumped in transit)

vial has what we got after 2 hours of un-sedated table-time at the vet; 4 furries are scabs I got today.

That's pretty tiny shot. If it is smaller than birdshot, say, #9 to #12, and especially the latter, it could be that the dog was hit with a snakeshot cartridge from a handgun, not a shotgun.

yep, whitepatch on his chest, and sternum, along w/subq masses, thus incredibly difficult to place. (White anywhere is a disqualifying feature in dobermans). Didn't stop him from crawling into my heart, and his height is a DQ as well.

Cop thot snakeshot right away: I know nothing about it. School me please?

CCI Shotshell Ammunition 38 Special, 357 Magnum 109 Grain #9 Shot Box of 10 - MidwayUSA

They're basically mini shotgun shells for handguns. Purpose is primarily for snake protection. Shot size is very small because it provides better pattern density. You're firing at a fairly small target, and the rifling in a handgun barrel tends to spread the shot and make an erratic pattern.

It would be easy for someone to even walk by or ride a bike and take a shot at a dog.

And, snakeshot is not very deep penetrating. Each pellet has very little energy. Snakeshot can be ineffective on a heavy winter parka.

Generally, #9 snakeshot is found in centerfire handgun loads like the .38 and #12 snakeshot (which this may be) is found in .22 rimfire snake loads. If this is #12 then it is probably from a .22 LR or .22 WMRF. Remington used to make a .45 ACP snakeshot load with #12 shot, but it's been discontinued for about two decades.

Here's a chart showing the various shot sizes. Note how small the #12 shot is.
