Hi all. My parking brake cable experienced catastrophic failure during one of my most boneheaded maneuvers ever... involving the parking brake, low-low w/ an SM420, and a loud BANG!

I'm having trouble getting the right one. Two Toyota parts guys confirmed p/n 4641060020 as being correct for my 6/70 build FJ40, but...

My parking brake cable has a threaded end to the housing which is double-nutted to a larger bracket/flange bolted to the firewall...

While the one I got from the dealer doesn't have dem nutz, and has a smaller flange & bolt pattern...

I searched & found nothing on this. I'm sure someone has a similar cable to the ones at the top & can set me straight on the correct p/n or the right build date to order. Please help.

Thanks! -Ed '70FJ40

You need a parking brake cable for a 40 series that was made before 03/76...

The new cable you have works for 07/70 and earlier 40 series...

You need the cable for a 08/70. or a 1971 to 1975 40 series....If the three speed parking brake cable was long enough, then get one for a 1973, if it was tight, get on for a 1975.

I have a 1973 in the shop right now that has not been messed with, and it has the style that you removed from your truck...

Oh, and don't feel bad....you are not the only person to have driven through the parking brake and tore things all to hell....hopefully you can get the broken bolts out of the parking brake mount on the back of the tcase....while you have that out..you should have the seal area cut for two seals.. :)

Good luck!

HIJACK

Can any machine shop cut the housing for two seals? And is mudrak the only place that actually sells these housings? How much are they? Has anybody gotten one and recall how much it was? I only hear good things about mudrak.

Thanks!!

HIJACK over

Gary has been doing this, and selling them for a long time now...I am not aware of anyone else that offers these already done....

Hit him up and pick one up from him.

No Steve. My July of 70 fj40 has the same one as in the pic with the threaded deal on firewall. Check e-bay or call Kurt. Yes , you need the adjustment at firewall.

Well John, the cutoff must be earlier than 08/1970 huh... My 08/68 had the style of the new one... and I have a another late 1969 that has the new style cable pictured.

In any case John, if he was to ask for a parking brake cable from a 1973, or a 1974, he would get the correct one....only difference being length for a three or four speed trans.

Thanks for the help guys. I will order the '75 one for the length. I will also see if a friend w/ a lathe can cut the seal surface in the speedo housing for me.

Two new questions:

1) Is there a gasket between the xfer case & speedo housing? Toyota guy says no; I've never had that apart. If yes, what do they call it?

2) What do you know about the little horseshoe clip that holds the cable in? Toyota guy says there are three sizes (IIRC 6, 7.5, and 11mm... and that they stock the 6 for trucks).

Yes there is a gasket between that housing, and it should be shown on the film or ECat they use now...have not ever seen a part number for it seperately, but the rest of the gaskets are available seperate, so I do not see why that one would not be...

I have not ever put a caliper on the groove of the cable to size it....those clips have always come in a service kit that people have orderd from SOR...

If yours is not broken, you can reuse them....I have done that before, as I am sure that others have done too...

Good luck!

Got the 4 broken bolts out last night w/out taking off the speedo housing! :bounce:

Used these power extractors I got as a gift for the 1st time... worked like a charm. They're these two piece deals you run in your drill in reverse. WAY EASIER than so-called easy-outs. They're called Drill-Out Power Extractors (no affiliation; just very impressed).

Anyway, thought I'd post up that the groove on my existing cable measured 6.85mm. I assume this means order the 6mm clip so it's tight? We'll see when it comes in.

Thanks again. -Ed '70FJ40

whatever Steve.:D
Hi-jack , what is your take on runnin with a worn( severly) thrust washer behind 1 of the spider gears in the arb ?

ARB said , " they are replaceable" and that if let go it may eat into case. I realize that but was more concerened with wether or not a piece of thrust washer could lead to catastrophic failure ? arb did not say that , that is just a worst case scenario.

I wouldn't...If the locker is on the bench, and even if it is not out, replace it, without question.

The thrust washer being ground up in the bearings and other components will not do anything to increase their life expectancy...

It is not that difficult to replace really...even if you have to remove the ring gear from the carrier....The time and money thought to be saved today, will only be wasted on a re-do in the future.

Good luck!

-Hijack over-.......for a minute. ;)

Update: ordered the '75 cable (4641060091) the other day. Toyota guy calls back this morning, says it's not available anywhere, and that it looks to him like it didn't have the threaded end anyway.

What??? Why the :censor: he didn't tell me this 3 days ago, I don't know.

End of rant. I told him to get the 7/70-1/75 cable for 3-spd in (4641060021), which he claims he can get. This dealership is a PITA to get to, so info to avoid wasted trips would be helpful...

I hope this is long enough w/ an SM420 & 3/4" plate adapter. Anyone?

Thanks again. -Ed '70FJ40
