I don't know much about carbs except that they don't run as well as EFI  I have read a lot on pirate over the years about tuning aisin carbs on 22r engines but I can't recall a pic of what I'm looking for. Im not into going through all the work it would take to mount the carb backwards etc etc but I want to see if anybody has run into a pic of extending the vent tube to help a little offroad. I haven't actually had mine choke on me (in fact this thing does a lot better at angles than my fj60 aisin carb did) but after I get my truck put together (should only be a couple weeks :grinpimp:) I'm going to be playing around on some real trails. Since I read that you extend the vent tube with fuel line and I happen to have plenty of it, this will be a free mod and something to take my mind off of waiting for the last few parts to trickle down to my doorstep.

Any hints or tips? Even if it hasn't choked yet, I would like to minimize my chances, or atleast lessen them.

Don't wory about it unless you actually have a problem.

My carbed 84 works fine at steep angles.

i have not heard of this.
seems valid.
i have lots of tech pics, but none of a stock carb.
hmmm.
unless someone chimes in, i would open up the float cover and find the vent that way

Actually after torturing myself digging through about 30 search pages of people getting flamed (with a dash of tech on the side) on Pirate I did find what I was looking for. I guess it is supposed to help a lot to extend the vent with the smallest diameter hose possible and either use a catch bottle for the excess fuel and to drop the float level a little. I don't know what I'm really talking about though but there were a few pics with good explanations on Pirate. I really don't like carbs very much though, so much work and maintenance for such sub standard performance (my opinion, carb lovers please dont burn me). I needs to get me a 22re or a 3rz when this puppy dies.

It's simple to do; The line doesn't need to be heavy duty, it will never carry pressure, just fuel resistant thin wall hose, sized to fit tightly over the vent. I just push it on the vent, then run a least a full loop inside of the air filter and mount it to the air cleaner housing with hose mount clamps like pictured.

A couple of points about mounting things in the air cleaner, carb area; Make sure it's mounted solid, you don't want anything falling off and getting sucked into the motor, I use self locking nuts and lock-tite or rivets. Make sure that the screw, nut has clearance on the outside, doesn't interfere with linkage, hoses, etc.

The "inside the air cleaner trick" works well for all but the most hardcore. On our offroad race cars we went a little more elaborate, mainly for roll over protection. Removed the carb top plate, pulled the vent tube, tapped and plugged the hole with an allen plug. Then drilled the center of the top plate, over the float and inserted a fitting, attached a hose, ran it in a big vertical circle around the motor and capped it with a fuel filter. The idea is to have some part of the hose higher than the float bowl, no matter what angle, orientation the rig is sitting at, then fuel cant spill.

yep, I saw a pic of something similar to that on pirate. The guy drilled a hole in the top of his air cleaner housing, installed a rubber grommet and used a hose that fit tightly around the vent tube and the grommet. It extended about 3 inches taller than the air cleaner, than coiled down below the carb to a water bottle (off a bicycle, with a holder off a bike ). I didn't really understand it when I was looking at it and he didn't really elaborate much but your paragraph put it all together for me.
