well, i was going to post up a topic on finding a good enclosed hammock/bivvy set up, till i ran into this site!

Hammock Forums - Elevate Your Perspective - Hammock Camping

lookin for a simple miniimalist design that get's the job done...would love a jungle hammock but dang they're just so pricey!

cheers.

Hammock camping is the way to go, especially for backpacking. I ditched a full tent setup about 3 years ago. The winters aren't terribly cold down here, so hammocks are an option during the whole year.

I have three hammocks. My wife got me a portable one she found in the Sky-Mall magazine for father's day several years ago. It's great for my kid's swim meets, which last for hours. I also have a huge cotton one, made in Central America that can hold 2 adults or 4 kids very comfortably. Last year, I picked up an ENO hammock, that is small, compact and now is always in my LC, when it's not in my backpack.

a buddy and I made some camping hammocks about ten years ago now. zip up bug screen, little kinda diamond shaped rain fly. things were awesome.

really comfortable and you could camp on the side of a hill as long as there were a couple trees.

kindof the single guy option for sleeping tho, soon as you start camping with :princess: you get into the two person sleeping arrangements...;p

Did a month long bike tour in Australia using a military surplus jungle hammock, worked great. Even used it as a ground tent/bivy setup.

Yea that's the one I use. If you plan on backpacking with it while using a rainfly, don't use ENO rainflies because they run a little short, and you will get soaked. I learned that one the hard way. :whoops:

I have a couple of different rain flies that work well...not the ENO ones.

I worked in the Amazon basin and when folks traveled they carried a hammock. In the homes and on the river boats there were no beds, just hooks on the walls. I brought back 2 Brazilian matrimonial hammocks which have plenty of room for company.

x2 on the ENO hammock. Always have it in the truck.

What do you use? I'm casually looking for one.

I bought a coated nylon rain fly 10'x12' from REI 20 years ago that has held up well. Last year I bought one on line that is a super light weight, super strong, 10'x8'. The fabric was called "ny-sil or ny-silk" or something like that. Strong as nylon, light as silk. I don't remember the source or brand unfortunately, but a litte google search will show you a few options out there.

Yea, I've got one on order. It's an OES McCat tarp. I'm backpacking on the AT in a couple of weeks and am only sleeping in a hammock. :) I've changed my suspension away from the ENO slap straps (serious sagging) and spent some serious $$$ on that lightweight tarp. I believe the material you're referring to is called silnylon.

Silnylon - that's it! Thanks. You'll love how light weight it is and how small it packs down. Have a great trip and good luck with the new set up. I found that para-cord works great, is light weight, and strong enough for what you're doing.

I started hiking with adjustable poles a few years ago and have found they work great, inverted, as tarp poles, if you are on the ground We find ourselves there from time to time, without well positioned trees for hammock hanging, here in CO and UT from time to time.

I'm actually using these things called whoopie slings that I found on the hammock forum. They're made from amsteel cord and are extremely light. Look them up, it was a great, cheap upgrade that cut a lot of weight.

just noticed the extra info on here, nice!

well, just so happens that i found a hennessy ultralight in great shape on kijiji here locally, so i grabbed it for relatively cheap vs brand new!

took minutes to set up the first time! pretty impressed, and my son can fit in there with me too!

I love my hennessy...

I love hammocks, we have a bunch of them. Backyard chilling, camping, tying up food, etc., very practical.
