Ok....for those of you with questions...it can be carried inside. Out of the elements and locked down. This is my 60 inch inside my 80. It runs under the 2 seats and isn't pushed all the way back to the rear gate either. Both seats fold down on it fine.

That makes me feel a bit better, however, call me paranoid, but at 70 mph the dynamics of things change and it seems akin to hanging a 300 weight over my bed with 300 lb test line and trusting it. The whole setup doesn't bother me except the placement right behind your seat. I guess you can what it anything to death but a retaining cable would make me feel a lot better.
