Can anyone tell me who built this? And care and feeding of the beast if you know.

Thanks

ditto on the GOV lock looking carrier, but since its in a removeable third, i would bet
to say is is a factory or aftermarket limited slip, there was weird limited slips on
ebay for cruiser axles awhile back they were japan made.

Downey (???) or someone used to sell modified GM "gov-loc" to fit the cruisers. I sent one in and had it modified, but sold it to another cruiser owner. He was a hard core wheeler and it blew up on him before the summer was over. Does it have spacers between the carrier and the ring gear?

I believe they used reg gear oil with GM LSD additive

I had some in my FJ-60 that looked like that. The PO's receipt called 'em "gov locks", as described above. I believe they lock via centrifugal force on a cam. Requires a minimum speed difference between the two wheels. I don't think I could ever get them to lock up, but I don't like flooring the accelerator when I think I need to lock the differential--seems like it's a good way to break something. I replaced mine with ARB's.

I would be highly interested in any information on it if it is a machined GOVloc,
I am looking for an extra carrier and a lunchbox locker, but its for my V8 daily
and for a cheaper price i would be more then willing to use one. OR if
someone has the machining info i will build my own?

I am fully aware of the gov loc and everyone can not stand them.

This is a $$$$ at current situation kind of call more then anything. and yes my
rear third is going out.

Gov loc

ok looks like thats what this thing is. I even found a link explaining how it works. http://www.traction.eaton.com/prod2.htm It has a video there too. Neat little critter.

It does require a minimum difference in wheel speed. I could just turn wheel on the axle by hand with no problem. It seems this is generaly an unreliable locker though. I think that a change in spring tention could make it lock with less of a speed diff and that would lesssen the chances of it failing though. (I kinda think thats why some people like then and others hate them).

Mine came out of a front axle I bought, and the guy I got it from had just bought the cruiser and was going to put in a D-60, so he had no idea it was there. It does appear to have that spacer in between the ring and carrier.

It also looks like I'd have to shorten the spacer that goes between the axle as the internals get in the way some. So it may just be best to put it in the front. Dunno. For now I'm just gonna toss an open 3rd back in mine so I can get it back on the road(thank you Pygpen!).

Thank you all for the help

Dave
