I have an 87 Hilux and will be buying 5:29 gears and a Detroit Locker. I was looking at Detroit Lockers in 4WheelParts and noticed there are different types of Detroit Lockers. They have different Splines, amount of bolts and inches. What does all this mean and how do I know which one to buy? Thanks!

Splines has to do with the axle shafts. At the end of the shafts are a set of splines that connect to the differential carrier. This is to your tires will turn. Toyota's have 30 splines on the end of their axle shafts in the rear. The bolt count is the number of bolts on the differential I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Here's the link to the ones you need, Differentials - Toyota 8In - 4 Wheel Parts.

Mudder is correct about the number of bolt holes. Toyota 8" ring gears have (x10) ring bolts. When your ordering at 4Wheelparts they will obviously ask what vehicle/axle it will be going in. Toyota 8" is all you need to say!

I did read on another website that Toyota started using an 8" axle after 86 due to the IFS. But my 87 is Hilux and came factory with a SFA. I couldn't find much info on whether the Hilux is an 8" or 7.5". And I doubt 4WheelParts would know since it's a non-domestic truck. Do you know or where I can find more info on a Hilux axle?

The rear is an 8". The only 7.5" are ifs

Toyota axles front and rear have always been 8", at least for American models anyway. IFS DIFFs are 7.5". I'm not sure about Hilux models but my guess is they are 8" as well.

Your 87 is SFA? So it was converted?
Hilux-pickup,surf, 4Runner are all the same domestic or not. All 4x4s are 8" diffs front and rear up to 85 and 7.5" ifs front from then on.

Nope, the american line of pickups with SFA stopped at 1985, while the Hilux models stopped the SFA at 1997

Toast its imported, they did keep making SFA later then in the US

That's news to me, and really fxxxing cool news! I didn't realize front solids are still out in the world in large numbers

Yep, one could buy a solid axle hilux until 1997 in most (if not all?) overseas markets. I've got a JDM 1990 4 door with 2.8 diesel and the solid axle. For the sake of buying a locker the diff is a standard 4cyl 8 inch, width is the same as north american solid axle. To this day one can purchase a 79 series landcruiser with a solid front diff on coils very similar to the setup found under an 80 series. They can be had with both an inline 6 gas, 6 cyl diesel, or a v8 twin turbo diesel. So cool.. so unfair.

Might want to check out grizzly lockers by Yukon. Suppose to be latest version of carrier type lockers like the Detroit. A little cheaper and suppose to have a smoother operation. Could be worth investigating.
