I had a '98 5.7 Vortec & 4L60E put in my '84 by a leading 4x4 shop. Cost more than $10K, but it's done right. Purrs when you baby it, roars when you stand on it. Idles down real good, too. And it doesn't stink like a 2F. Gets about 15mpg 50/50 street/highway @ 6-7,000'.

And I can go to practically any garage to get the engine or trans worked on. Parts everywhere.

And I still love the 2F in my '83 (came out of the '84). But it's ssssssslllllloooooowwwwww!

I hear the parts avaliability argument a lot. In my experience the 2F is so dependable that parts are not really an issue. Even when I have had problems I have never had any trouble finding parts.

A 2F that is running correctly won't stink anymore than any other internal combustion engine.
