Which gears to go with? 4.88s or 5.29s in my 2.7L 5-speed taco?

My stock gears were 3.59's with 28's. When I got the truck it had 31's on it with 3.59's, and although it bogged quite a bit, it wasn't unmanageable. It just liked to cruise on the freeway. I was still getting 22 MPG with that setup.

Now I've got a TRD rear axle (4.10's) with 31's, and it feels a LOT lower. It sure zips around now.

Damn, 3.59! Are you sure you don't mean 4.59? My 84 2wd had 3.90 in it. I guess they are really shooting for MPG, and the stronger motor can handle it. If that is right, according to the charts 4.88 should be all you need, and will still be a little deeper than your stock set up.

I think you will be happy with them. Let us know how it works out for the power, rpm, MPG, etc.

I know, I couldn't believe that they were 3.59's stock either. They only did those for a couple years because they realized they were geared a bit too high.

I'll keep you guys posted with what kind of MPG and power I end up with.
