Hello, i was went to the last King of the Hammer in Johnson Valley. which lead me to want to join the 4x4 rock crawling world. I know i want a Toyota just curious on model and year to look at. and what the price range i should look at. All my friends drive jeeps so they wont know much advice to give. just need to know where i should start at.

First off, get whatever yota you like/want. It doesn't matter what everyone thinks. Since your going to be the one putting money into it, and driving it, definately get what YOU WANT. But, in my opinion, and I'm sure others will agree/disagree, a yota with a 22r/re would be a good choice for simplicity. Then just regear for larger tires. I prefer the 1984 thru 1988 pickups. And the first gen 4 runners. But that's just my taste. I also really like the 1979 thru 1983 pickups. In my opinion the best body styles are the first gen pickups. But a 1985 would be SWEET. The first year of electric fuel injection, yet it still had a solid front axle from factory. I love my 1988 with the 22re. Very strong engine. And I'm about to start an sas on it and also redoing the clutch and a few other things.

Get whatever year you want I say as long as you're getting into Yotas. I love them all - used to hate the newer body style but now it's growing on me. Really depends on your plans, but since you sound like your going to eventually SAS the rig I'd say keep it older than 95 and stay with the 22re rigs. Just look for your typical older vehicle issues. There is so much aftermarket support for these trucks you've got choices for whatever you want to do. just make sure it runs good (or not) and go from there with making it a badass rig to show up your buddys with.

They're all great trucks. Had an 87 with 22ret (RIP), have a 93 now with 22re, want a 70's Hilux if I can find a good one for street, also wanted a 1st gen pickup real bad too so I just bought the RC version :)
