Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes.

Toploader and myself are flying to toronto to pick up a cruiser. We'll be driving it home to norcal, stopping at the BHCC along the way.
Instead of stopping along the way at junk food "restaurants", I'd rather have a decent meal or ten along the way. It's a 2500 mile trip. This will be my first time driving that route.
Life is too short for crappy food.
So I'm looking for input on where to eat. Not looking for anything fancy. We're not vegetarians or vegans. Kill it, burn the hair off and put it on my plate.

Whatcha got? :grinpimp:

Thanks in advance!

almost 50 people have looked at this and nobody knows of a place to get some decent food?!

come awn guys!

When I am on the road I eat at Denny's quite often. They have good portions and are 24/7.

Truck stops are usually good as well. You can shower and shave for $5 or $10.

Those are good options for the interstates. If I am on roads that travel through small towns (as opposed to by-passing them) I will stop at a family diner.

Wha'cha picking up? What route are you taking?

Driving an HDJ81 home.

I'm trying to stay away from the chains and truck stops. Looking for "that place" that offers a special sandwich, some good BBQ or a great steak. Willing to drive a little ways into town or off the freeway to get a good meal.

When you are passing through chi town, get off at harlem and hit portillos, or go another couple miles and hit my all time favorite.... the original pops on 127th.

See you at bhcc.

Dates? I know when BHCC is (July 18-21) but what is your target travel dates?

Hubbell House Restaurant - Mantorville, Minnesota Not too far off your likely track in MN, very neat place with lots of history and good food...lunch or dinner.

Apple Holler for breakfast...between Chi and Milw. I've made trips down there for Saturday breakfast. Tasty bacon.

Midwest small chain, Machine Shed. The Machine Shed Restaurant .:. Share the Spirit of the Season. Heather attempts to finish their cinnamon french toast every time and fails half way thru...she failed again this morning...

If you are in WI on a Friday night, a fish fry is worth the effort...our FAVORITE is still at our campground outside Waupaca WI, but most any bar/restaurant will do...the more silver hair'd folks at the bar, the better the food and drinks...old fashioned's are the drink of choice, brandy or whiskey, sweet or sour...if you are lucky, they'll muddle them rather than use mix... (really, Waupaca wouldn't be stupid-far off your course) Friday Fish fries are best handled at 5pm or so, and don't plan to drive after...the cocktails can be brutal

I could talk ourselves into spending the night there on Friday July 13.

MJ-Stevens - Restaurant - Home Page, Welcome is also good, and not as much off your track. N of Milwaukee on hwy 41.

Happiness w/ a side of Burgers | AJ Bombers has a Madison and Milwaukee location. I have not personally eaten there, but am told they have amazing burgers.

And, in WI, cheese curds...the best are in Zittau WI at Union Star Cheese (close to Waupaca, oddly...) but most others are good too. warm and wet and fresh and squeeky... Deep fried also rocks (as does anything else deep fried...)

...oh, and another DIVE but classic breakfast joint is Mickies Dairy Bar in Madison...worth the visit, just for the atmosphere...

My folks live in Rochester, but when I'm home, I eat at home...

Post a map of the route you plan to take.

It's not a restaurant, but since you'll be going by there. I highly suggest that you visit the Henry Ford Museum. http://www.hfmgv.org/museum/index.aspx

You can easily spend the entire day there. The collection of cars is amazing.

The Alpine Inn in Hill City, SD only serves filet mignon for a great price ($9-$12) and not that far from where you will be staying for the BHCC.

Bring yer own food !

:)

I am

i don't think i'll be able to bring enough on the plane. keep in mind, i'm bringing toploader along. that boy can eat!
and i've been known to have a bite or two.....

Georg, If you take this route I'm in Green River, WY right on I80. Let me know if you need anything on the way through. Penny's Diner is a greasy spoon for breakfast and whatnot or Buckaroo's would do the trick as well. Both are easy to get on and off the interstate.

If its the weekend and you guys have some time I'll BBQ up some stuff or go grab a bite with you.

J
