where to dispose of a dead car battery?

I assume this is something I can't leave out for regular collection. Who disposes of them, and is there a fee?

Normally I'd leave it in Jeremy's yard, but I don't think he has one.

canadian tire... i have always put them on the cart they leave out for used oil and filters...
