My 179,000 mile '95 FJZ just developed a new (potentially) bad habit:mad:. During a long drive, the radiator overflow expansion tank fills completely up, and won't drain back into the radiator as the engine cools, eventually leaving the radiator very low on fluid. Also, the inside of the plastic tank smells like exhaust, and despite repeated flushing, the antifreeze doesn't remain clear, but quickly becomes cloudy. I suspect a leak in the block (HG?) allowing exhaust into the coolent, and pressurizing the coolent, hence the out flow problem. Otherwise, the engine performs flawlessly, so I'm hesitent to pull the head unless I have to. Any ideas? Any quick fixes? (ha, ha) The cloudy anti freeze problem has been around for a while, but the out flowing coolent is new, and I'm concerned about eventually running out while driving, and damaging the engine. Thanks, Ned

Yep, compression is higher pressure than the cooling system pressure and pushes coolant into overflow. Classic case of HG.

Classic failed HG. Get Doug's DVD ASAP and stop driving it until this is fixed.

time for a head gasket... take it off the road now. coolant is probably going into the cylinder as well. if much seeps past the cylinder walls your bearings will corrode and spin.
