New diesel owner here...HJ61. There’s a knob to pull just under the 4hi button on the dash. The logo looks like it’s for a choke. What’s this called in a diesel?

Throttle.

Yep... It should let you set the accelerator pedal with that knob and cable. On my 40 series the cable attaches to the pedal itself...

Think of it as mechanical cruise control. It was also used to control the engine for use with a PTO winch.

This one also attaches to your accelerator pedal. Its there for a number reasons. Like for controlling the PTO speed if you have one ,which maybe connected to a winch.
It keeps the rpms up when its really cold, although it has to be bad to stall a 12HT.
I like using them over really rough ground but I wouldn't use it on the road..
You turn it clockwise to increase the rpm, helps if you use a bit of foot power on the pedal.
I think it is called an "accellerator" and the foot pedal is a throttle.

I am pretty sure in my owners manual it recommends using it for cold starts although it makes sense for winching as well.

I tried using it for cruise control a bunch of times on long trips and always found it was either too slow or too fast and doesn't really allow you to speed up before coming to a hill.

When cold use it to set rpm a bit higher and shut engine off, next cold start is easy without over revving.

Cable assy 78410-90A02 and 78410-90A10
(For gasoline FJ the part is 78410-90A03)

The C-bolt is 90179-20005

Wears out when grooves fade:

A very dangerous practice. In an emergency, you wont be able to use engine breaking immediately. 1/10ths of second count in an emergency stop. If the vehicle flips, the engine will be roaring away, possibly pumping diesel onto a hot manifold.

If you have a 5spd that is your off road gas pedal. My throttle is so touchy when i am off road at low speeds i just got really good at using that. Pretty muh set the rpm i want and if i need more power ill put my foot down.

Yea its a bad practice to use that as a cruiser control on the road but to each their own I guess. Holds solid speeds on flat ground going up or down hills I use the pedal.

Hand throttle, id use it for morning cold starts and winching / any pto attachment that requires slighty higher revs to operate faster.

Always push your accellerator pedal down to the desired revs you require before you adjust the hand throttle knob to avoid strain on it too.

Is that a cigarette lighter output added on there beside It?

I agree 100%. The times I used it I was on a highway in Northern Canada that is long and straight and you might only see a vehicle once an hour or so. I don't know what it is about the accelerator position on the 40 series but it hurts my knee after 5+ hours of driving at the same speed. I rarely drive more than 3 hours now and I'm in a more populated area so it is only used for cold starts.
