Managed to get air in the system. Pump is howling and it’s hard to turn. What’s the trick to bleed the system of air?

If it suddenly did it you have other problems
Might be cracked overflow bottle or clogged filter in the reservoir.

A few times I did it are very easy to bleed.
1. Jack both front wheels
2. Don't start the engine
3. Move the wheel left and right a few times all the way.
4. Check fluid level
5. Bump start the engine. In GX it would start. Just turn it back off as soon as it start.
6. Repeat step 4
7. Repeat step 3

I was able to bleed mine just by repeating it twice as long as all the parts are in good working order.

Thanks. Didn’t work though. I replaced the air control valve when I broke it accidentally. I think I need better thread sealant, my guess is it’s sucking air in there.

Still stuck here. i sealed the threads on the air valve. I've ran the tires back and forth about 25 times. Still have whining and very difficult to turn wheel.

The bleeding should just take a few minutes. I completely drained mine over the weekend when I replaced the steering rack. A few back-and-forth turns with the engine off, then a few starts and refills, and it was bled.

I would presume you are getting air in the system some other way. The air valve is on the high-pressure side of your PS system, so while it might let fluid out (mine is leaking and I need to reseal it....) I don't think it can be letting air in. The only "suction" parts of the PS system are the pump itself, the ~7/8" rubber hose running from the reservoir to the pump, and the reservoir. Perhaps you have a leak on that rubber hose, crack in the reservoir as mentioned above, or have an issue with the pump.

Got it sorted. I basically had to overfill it with fluid to get it to bleed out. There were so many bubbles it looked full, but it was mostly air.

Once I filled it to the brim and cycled a couple times it was fine.

Glad you got it. I did fill my reservoir up really high when I bled mine.

What kind of sealant did you use on the air valve fitting? I used basic Permatex thread sealant (in a jar) and it is seeping. I'm going to try to redo it with Teflon tape or something else that hopefully holds better.

I just used teflon tape, seems to be holding up!
