What's the deal with these things on my trailer?

I have this you-built trailer from the 60s that I picked up last year. Each corner has one of these vertical steel tubes welded on. I'm guessing they are supposed to be supports for some kind of canopy or shelter but I'm not sure. Can anyone help me out with how to make use of them? Maybe I can make some sort of frame to elevate a canoe or something above the top of the trailer. Or maybe they're just supposed to accept a bent PVC pipe with a tarp draped over. I know the second pic shows a bunch of mulch inside the tube but they are hollow all the way through; it's just packed in there real good.

Is it designed to accept a flanged pole slid into the inside, or a larger inner diameter pipe over the outside?

I would say same thing as glenn probably a boat rack because it doesnt have a spot for a cinch down bolt or pin

is there one on each rear corner ? I would guess it's for flags for the corners some guy's have them to assist when backing up .

tent trailers have those on the corners and they have adjustable leveling feet.

Being that they are hollow all the way through, I just don't see how they can be very practical. I think I'll end up taking it to a local fab shop and have them reinforce the weld and make a larger base at the bottom. That way I could fab a removable frame with crossbars such that the vertical poles slip over top of these supports and rest on the reinforced bases.

Tarp, canoe, maybe even RTT.

I was just hoping they might be more plug and play.

i would think for something a little heavier ,being its mounted to the bottom . if it was light then it would be on the top. open is better ,allows for more adjustment . you can stop the up down thing otherways ( drill some holes for pins at different hieghts ) can rattle a little. Or drill a hole and weld a nut to tighten agaianst the receiver if its a deck for hunting ,quads ,or a stripper pole ,i would extend them up level with the top frame and tack them together ( makes for a stronger trailer and more up down travel for your rack) . and it wouldnt be complete without the twirlly corkscrew tie down thingy's tacked on them too for that retro so sexy sixties look.
