We bought a 94 4runner with a badly cracked tranny. We figured it would be easy enough to find a tranny for it, but one shop we checked with looked in his book and informed us that a tranny from a 94 4Runner only will fit, or from a 94 and 95 truck. How accurate is this and what would the difference be? I have read that the 94 was the first year to offer ABS and after 95 the truck shared a transmission with the Tacomas. The truck is not here right now (still at tranny shop), but from what I have found on the net it looks like we have a 3VZE motor and an A340H transmission (our 4Runner is a 6cyl, AT). I assume if we were to find a transmission that as also an A340H, it should work.....right? Thanks for this great site!!

I think anything comparable in the 89-95 years should fit (V-6/2wd-V-6/4x4), with you possibly needing to replace drive shafts (but I don't think so).

Enough people hate these auto trannys enough to swap out a 5speed in their place (in fact, yours may be cracked from the PO smashing it repeatedly with a sledgehammer!) that you should be able to find one for sale on your local CraigsList, or check the "For Sale" sections of Toyota boards like this one for someone selling in your area.

Where are you located? I have a 1994 4Runner auto I selling cheap. Works perfect.
