What to look for in wreck diff centre?

Hi all

I just bought a complete front diff out of a HJ60 from a wreckers to use for a disk brake conversion on a 40, but I also have a 1986 HJ61 with a very unhappy rear diff centre

I’m hoping that I can kill 2 birds with one stone if the centre in the diff I bought is still good

Does anybody have any tips or tricks when checking for wear if you have the centre sitting on the table (apart from obvious stuff water, rust, metal etc etc) and how to measure any excessive wear

Check the FSM.. Without taking it apart you can check all the main items: preload of the pinion, backlash of the gears, and runout of the ring gear. If those are within spec, it should be good to go.

The FSM has steps for all of this and includes acceptable tolerances.

and you will also have to verify that the 60 and the 61 had the same gearing in the third member before you go and plop that "new" one into your rear axle housing.
