What the hell caused this? Any ideas?

Trust me, seen that kind of damage a bunch of times, something was hanging there, everytime the truck accelerated it swung back impacting the condenser, when the brakes were applied it swung forward, then back into the condenser when the truck stopped. When turning it swings to the side impacting in an arc. Each impact made a small dent in the fins, overtime that's the mark it leaves. From the shape of it, I would guess that the bolt came out of the horns and they hung by their wires, but it could have been a bunch of things including a chain hood lock like Koffer said, most of the time chains leave a bunch of closer together arcs, one for each link.

I'm with Tool on this one.

some liquid splashed in that pattern on the front of the condenser. The decibels from your HORN were sufficient to scare the cooling fins (already laden with being wet and all) right off the condenser. Mystery solved

(incidentally the arc of that pattern is consistent with ~800 hz sounds waves)

Well, since Tool seems to have figured it out, I'll continue with the "real" theory:

Misplaced alien crop circle!

I don't know what the whole "horn" thing is about with you guys, until I installed my new Fiamm's this weekend (which do not hang anywhere nearly that low), there was just the stock little beep beep which had never been touched.

Perhaps something hanging down (cable, chain) but why the hell would someone have something hanging down between there?

Especially the soccer mom and soccer dad who were the two PO's.

The hood is the original and there is no evidence that there was ever a problem with a latch or anything requiring an okie-rig to keep'er shut.

reffug,

The actual indentation does not bother so much as the wondering about what the fawk people do to their vehicles.

I mean, if there was some damage caused by something reasonable in a spot that was easily reached by road debris, or a rock or something, I would understand. But right there?

Very strange.

Maybe I mistook you for someone who was putting some locamotive airhorns in.....many apologies....I stand corrected....tools explanation seems plausible but I'm leaning towards crop circles.

Straightline winds perhaps? :D They've been known to leave linear and arc-like patterns in downed trees and other debris.

clean that up for better cooling... :)

Perhaps someone was wrenching on something nearby and the wrench and/or their knuckles were dragging across the condensor. I've seen similar damage (by doing it myself) when tinkering around on my Toys before. Luckily it was on radiators that were bad anyway. It doesn't take much at all to damage the fins, especially if they are corroded and bend as easy as paper. Or, maybe someone was trying to get to the hood latch from underneath?

Definate pattern there. You can find out where the obstructing oject was hanging from by following the path of the arc. In other words, if you follow the arc to make a complete circle in your mind, the center of the circle is the point where the object was hanging from. That should give you an idea of what it might have been. Comprendes?
