No EGR on Aussie 80s AFAIK. They still have HG failures

Oh yeah, it's been discussed to death. If it really does have an effect, it's certainly not the only factor.

I think most head gasket failures were the result of a change in materials during the 90's. Since replacing head gaskets I haven't seen reports of users having issues like there were with the originals and IIRC there are 3 or 4 revisions (@OGBeno maybe you know the exact revision count?)

Absolutely. It affected all Toyotas from that era, including even the "legendary" 22r (personal experience). Half the people I know had those 3.4 V6 Tacomas or 4Runners and they all had head gasket trouble at one point or another. Great engine once that was sorted out.
 
I was curious about this myself. Unladen commute in SoCal, sit around 190. I figure loaded for adventure in same ambient temp around 210. I don't think I'd panic unless I notice the temp rapidly increasing above 220ish
