What Ring and Pinion to use?

I am getting ready to put everything back together, I have the springs outboarded, axle is cut and turned and I am trying to decide if I should change out my ring and pinion.

I have a 350 with a Chevy NV4500, deep first gear!! As I mentioned FJ60 axles with 3.73s all on 33 inch tires. I plan to use the rig for everything long camping hauls, running trails here in Moab, etc.

With my current set up if I keep the 3.73s my crawl ration will be 54. With 4.11's it will be 59, 4.56-->66, 4.88-->71.

Speedo calc says that running the 4.88 gearing and with the .73 OD, I will be looking at RPM's of ~2600 doing 70 mph.

Going with the 4.88 seems to be a worthy option, but I wanted to run it by a few heads before I make my final decision.

I vote for 4.56's. Since you have an OD you have some freedom to go a touch lower than what is needed for your tire size. I think if you go deeper than that with that small of a tire you will lose the benefit of overdrive. 66 to 1 is a respectable crawl ratio for a cruiser and you have the bonus of more power with the V8.

Honestly if I were in your position I would just use 62 thirds and 4.11 gearing and save yourself a bit of money and time. Cuz I'm a cheap jerk. Or maybe not a jerk. Just a normal weirdo guy with no money. I didn't know your pig wasn't together. I've been having a helluva time getting mine back to running after taking engine out for firewall work. Almost there though. Are you gonna come on the relic run? I'm hoping to take my pig and the 67 40 that is currently in a pile of parts......I'm very wishful.
