Did you consider what I posted back in #11? I still think that's what it is. The 77 emissions manual says that switch is on the transmission, but doesn't show a picture of it. It's supposed to tell the computer when you're in 4th.

i reread the book and this is what mine shows, but my 40 has a computer??? where??

Computer is being generous, but that's what Toy calls it. It controlls the emissions, in particular the VSV. I am not sure where they are installed on your year.
