It's in a 9/73 Fj40. We just swapped in a 1981 2F. I need to hook up the wire from the igniter to ignition. I have determined the ignition wire to run through this thing on the left. Should I bypass it or use it? My manual does not show this part in the diagram unless I am just not seeing it. Thanks.

Ya got me. Did it come with the '73 originally or the '81 motor? Which manual are you looking at?
ballast resisitor, you don't need it anymore(if using the 81 dizzy and ign/coil) so bypass it.....
take the wire that goes into it and put it where the other end connects the the coil
oh and on the 81+ ignitor there are 2 green plugs, white is the one you want. the other one is for a tach.

I think it's, condenser no ignitor, ignitor no condensor
Electronic ignition no ballast resistor, no ballast resistor without electronic ignition equals no start. Or at least that's the learning process I went through! Otherwise "how Dave learned what a ballast resistor was" Or to paraphrase the quote 'ignorant resistance'

I'm learning a lot here (I think). No seriously this engine swap has been a lot easier thanks to this forum. I'm very impressed by the knowledge base that some of you have in these machines. I guess it helps to own fifty of them (pimp)!

elec dizzy& ignitor&coil= no ballast resister, no condenser
points dizzy&coil=condenser and maybe or maybe a ballast resistor. I know the non US dizzy has no ballast. ALso I beleive the coil must be matched for ballast or not, I think they say right on them.

Just to muddy this up.....on my 72 I'm running a Mallory magnetic
dist with a 40k coil and it requires the ballast resistor.
The 83 is stock with ignitor and no resistor and no condensor.
Lord knows what fires the 96 fzj80. I'm afraid to look.
Ignore all this Russ. No ballast resistor needed in your setup as others
have noted.
